First dual of the season and first conference matchup as well, the historic Westminster Gymnasium had a little buzz going as the wrestlers were finishing up their warmups and the referee was making his way to the mat. The men were coming off a quick road trip to St. Louis yesterday at the Maryville Open but all of them were upbeat and focused on the task at hand.
For the Westminster Lady Blue Jays, it was their season debut and were just as focused. They had a few injuries recently and their lineup was not at full strength. Coach Eierman expects the injuries to be healed up and his team back up to full strength as the season progresses. With the gaps in the lineup, the Westminster Ladies gave up two forfeits in the lighter weights before the first contested match.
Lila Eckert was the first wrestler out of the gate for Westminster and she came out aggressive. Unfortunately for her, her opponent from Lyon was ready and countered her moves to pin. After a double forfeit, sophomore Anna Stephen got Westminster on the board with a smooth takedown, then secured a tight leg lace and rolled her opponent to a tech fall in just 14 seconds.
