The Blue Springs wrestling team appeared to be in trouble.
The Wildcats trailed crosstown rival Blue Springs South 30-6 in Wednesday’s Suburban Gold Conference dual at Blue Springs High School.
Wrestler Interviews:
- Blue Springs senior Chase Baldwin (165)
- Blue Springs junior Korbin Schmidli (144)
- Blue Springs senior Damon Miller (150)
- Blue Springs junior Lake Johnson (175)
- Blue Springs South junior Callen Smithpeter (285)
The Jaguars got off to a hot start and likely needed just two more pinfall victories to clinch a win. However, a resilient Blue Springs team rattled off eight consecutive victories to capture a 50-30 victory.
“(The dual) didn’t start out great and we had a couple of guys out of the lineup,” Blue Springs head coach Bobbe Lowe said. “Whenever someone stops in those guys have to be ready and at the beginning, they weren’t ready.
“They just have to be ready to go out and score points. I think a few of them are learning how to do that. Our midweight guys stepped up. We had some freshmen in the lineup and it was the first time they were in a varsity lineup and they were in a new weight class. They did a job getting some bonus points when we needed them to.”
Two of those freshmen were Dom Payne (126 pounds) and Brock Combs (132).
