Wrestler Interviews:

Head coach Greg Thomas washed one foot of each of them to symbolize what the Bible said Jesus said he did for his disciples.

Those seniors also had a good day on the mat, combining to go 5-1 in 45-9 victory over University Academy and a 54-9 win over Lincoln Prep.

Smith, who is nicknamed “Frog” after the song “Jeremiah is a Bullfrog” and is the No. 4-ranked wrestler in his weight division, used a spladle to get pins over Lincoln Prep’s Phillip Faigan and University’s Joseph Mitiku in the third period.

In those matches, he purposely cut his opponents multiple times to work on his takedowns, In total, he had 22 takedowns in two bouts.

“That is by design, I am trying to go for the record and am trying to get as many takedowns as possible,” Smith said of cutting his opponents multiple times. “I want to get to 400 (for the season) and I currently have 345.”

Hinton (138), like Smith, also finished 2-0. He got a forfeit against the Gryphons and pinned Lincoln’s John Newton in the second period.

“I thought I wrestled pretty well,” Hinton said. “I can definitely get some more practice time in so I can get ready for districts.”

Self (150) went 1-1 for the day, getting his victory against the Gryphons’ Mark Shears after using a throw and a headlock to get a pin in 47 seconds.

Other Eagles to finish the day 2-0 were Hayden Murphy (138), John Newton (190), Zach Butler (215) and Ben Withers (285).

University Academy defeated Lincoln Prep in their head-to-head matchup, 27-24.

The Gryphons had two wrestlers who went 2-0 including Treyvon Cole (132), who earned a 10-5 decision against SCA’s Seth Stricklin and got a forfeit against Lincoln Prep.

“It could have done better, I got a little tired in the second half of the match,” Cole said. “I got most of my points off snap downs and shots.”

Eusavio Williams (165) was the other University Academy wrestler not to lose as he pinned Summit Christian’s Dakota Cobb in 5:05.

“I was really gassed, but I told myself, ‘Keep going. Don’t give up,’” Williams said. “He ended up giving up so I got the pin.”

There also were two wrestlers for the Tigers who finished the night unbeaten. Jeffrey Taylor (150) won by forfeit against the Gryphons and topped Self 7-1. Tyler Jones (113) got a forfeit win against University Academy and pinned Summit Christian’s Jonah Janssen in 43 seconds.

“I really just wanted to get everything over with,” Jones said. “Just double leg, and go home.”
