Monett Wins Own Tourney; Nationally Ranked Curd Goes Down

This past weekend the #1 Monett Cubs hosted their own tournament and took the top spot with 284 team points and 5 champions. The Willard Tigers finished in second place with 274.5 points and one champion but four total finalists. Bolivar took the bronze with 230.5 points and two champions. Oak Grove was fourth with 229.5 points and three finalists. Moberly rounds out the top five with 224.5 team points and two champions.

At 106 Willard’s #3 Christian Finley handed #2 Kyler Carter of Webb City his first loss of the year in a an upset 4-2 decision. Finley moved to 33-1 while Carter falls to 22-1. For the bronze Preston Sleeth of Rogersville won a close 5-4 decision over Granite Cunningham of Bolivar.

Freshman #3 Zach Lewis of Moberly took the gold at 113 with a fall in the first period over Willard’s #5 Michael Finley. Lewis is having a great freshman campaign and improved his record to 27-1. The 3rd place match was won by Bentonville West’s (ARK) Charles Easterling via a first period fall over HM Canyon Cunningham of Bolivar.

At 120 there was a match-up of two #1 wrestlers, Karter Brink of Monett dropped from 126 to take on Rogersville’s Gabe Brandenberg. Brink won in a convincing fashion by a 8-4 margin in what could be a state finals preview. The bronze medal was won by Branson’s Christian Cartright in a 4-3 decision over Oscar Martinez of Willard.
