Missouri Valley College Men’s Wrestling opens season at Kaufman-Brand Open

Marshall, Mo. (November 11, 2017)- The No. 2 Missouri Valley College men’s wrestling team traveled to St. Louis, Mo., Saturday to compete in the Kaufman/Brand Open at Maryville (Mo.) University.  The Vikings competed in both the Elite and Amateur divisions, and against NCAA Division I and Division II programs.

Elite Division

Junior Marcus Thompson (Lawrenceville, Ga.)-157 pounds

First Round: Lost to Sean Hosford from the University of Missouri in a 5-0 decision.
Consolation First Round: Received a bye.
Consolation Second Round: Defeated Daniel Rittell of Williams Baptist in a 10-6 decision.
Consolation Third Round: Defeated DeQaylon Gray of Central Baptist in a second period (4:11) pin.
Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Karsten Van Velso from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in a 7-6 decision.Fifth Place Match: Lost to Nick Gasbarro from the University of Illinois in a 7-2 decision.

Senior Sterling Karr (Warsaw, Mo.)-157 pounds

First Round: Lost to Matt Pratt of Maryville (Mo.) University in a 21-4 technical fall.
Consolation First Round: Received a bye.
Consolation Second Round: Lost to DeQaylon Gray of Central Baptist in an 11-4 decision.

Junior Blade Weber (Edwardsport, Ind.)-184 pounds

Quarterfinal: Lost to Zachary Kearney of Central Baptist in a first period pin.
Consolation First Round: Lost to Taylor Watkins from the University of Missouri in a first period pin.

Junior Payton Napoli (Farmington, Mo.)-285 pounds

First Round: Lost to Demetrius Thomas of Williams Baptist in a first period pin.

Consolation Second Round: Lost to Ben Melton of Drury (Mo.) University in a third period pin.

Amateur Division

Freshman Glen Eisman (Gainesville, Fla.)-174 pounds

Second Round: Lost to Elijah Scott of Indianapolis (Ind.) University in a 9-1 major decision.
Consolation Second Round: Received a bye.
Consolation Third Round: Defeated Taylor Pritchett of Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in a 15-0 technical fall.
Consolation Fourth Round: Defeated Josh Culp of Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in a 6-4 decision.
Consolation Fifth Round: Lost to Unattached Lagan Rice in a 4-3 decision.

Sophomore Zac Guerrero (Yuma, Ariz.)-184 pounds

First Round: Received a bye.
Quarterfinal: Defeated Austing Hawes of Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in a 7-4 decision.
Semifinal: Defeated Todd Angel of Drury (Mo.) University in an 18-2 technical fall.
First Place Match: Defeated Charlie Terrana of Drury (Mo.) University in a 5-2 decision.

The men’s wrestling team had unattached participants, which included one student-athlete finished sixth in his weight class.

“Today, we saw a lot of young guys battle and win matches,” said Associate Head Coach Pat Giangrosso.  “We are excited for the future of this crew and to get them back to fine tune some things.  Overall, I am happy with the fight shown today.  This is a great starting point, and we will look to improve each week.”

Next up for the men’s wrestling team is the Missouri Duals, taking place at the Hearnes Center at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.  The Vikings will take part in a quad-dual, competing against NCAA Division I Missouri and NCAA Division II opponents, Truman State (Mo.) University and the University of Central Missouri.  The event starts at 12 p.m.
