Dubuque, Iowa. (January 6, 2018) – The Maryville University Saints open the second half of the season at the Pat “Flash” Flanagan Open which featured several Division I wrestlers. The Saints continued their success with at least one wrestler winning a championship. Will Roark once again led the Saints with a title at 141 lbs.
Roark started his run with a quarter-final win over Jordan Ringler, Davenport, MI with a major decision 14-2. In the semi-finals Roark opened his offense and pinned Chase Lienhard, Northern Iowa in 2:33 of the first period. In the finals, Roark beat Aaron Meyer, University of Iowa 4-0. Roark is 15-4 heading in to the Midwest Duals next weekend.
With a personal best performance, Kolby Smith placed 5th at 125 lbs. Smith’s performance was highlighted by a fall in 1:41 over Jacob Hiles, Loras College. Smith would wrap up his day with a 3-2 record which included 2 falls. Taylor Jokerst claimed fourth place in the 133 lbs. classification recording a fall in his final match.
James Krischke advanced to the title match at 149 lbs. before getting edged 9-7 in SV-1 by Keaton Geerts from the University of Iowa. Krischke had a pin in 2:08 to start his day, then posted an 11-2 major over Tristan Lara of Northern Iowa. He reached the finals with a 5-2 decision over Ryan Leisure of Iowa State.
Matt Pratt advanced to the title bout at 157 lbs. but was defeated by DI wrestler Keegan Shaw of Iowa. He recorded a 9-0 major, then followed with a thrilling 7-5 victory in SV-1 to reach the finals. However, Shaw defeated Pratt by a 5-3 score. John Anderson took the fifth-place match at 165. He posted a 3-2 record. Anderson lost a narrow 3-2 SV-1 loss in the semi-finals to Austin Yant, Northern Iowa.
Bailey Kelly reached the first-place match at 184 lbs. He opened with an 11-1 major then followed with a dominating 16-1 tech fall. Kelly picked up a fall at 6:26 before losing in the title bout 12-7. Dustin Politte reached the 197 lbs. finals against Steven Holloway of Iowa. Politte notched a pin in just 1:54 then edged Sam Cook of Iowa 3-2. Against another Iowa wrestler, Politte was narrowly defeated 5-3 in SV-1 for the title.
Wrestling unattached, freshman Tyler Kreith, had a dominate performance placing 3rd at 125 lbs. Kreith was 5-1 on the day with 4 falls. Kreith, from O’Fallon, Missouri recorded all his falls in the first period. The fastest pin was over Jacob Hiles, Loras College in 1:37.
The Saints are back in action on January 13, 2018 at the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Nebraska.
