Five from @MizzouWrestling Set to Compete at U23 World Team Trials

October 6, 2017

Rochester, Minn. – Four current Mizzou Wrestling grapplers and one past wrestler will take the mat this weekend in search of a spot on the U.S. National Team at the U23 World Team Trials in Rochester, Minn. Greco Roman competitors will wrestle on Saturday, followed by freestyle wrestling on Sunday.

Athletes ranging from 18-23 years old (born 1994-1998) are eligible to compete in the event, with a spot at the U23 World Championships, set for Poland in November, on the line. Four current Mizzou wrestlers; redshirt sophomore Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.), redshirt freshman Wyatt Koelling (Kaysville, Utah), freshman Dack Punke (Washington, Ill.) and freshman Jake Raschka, as well as former Mizzou wrestler Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) are set to wrestle in freestyle competition on Saturday. Koelling will also compete in Greco Roman competition on Saturday.

A broadcast stream of the event (fee to watch), as well as brackets and live results will be available through TrackWrestling.com.

Eierman, who earned NCAA All-America honors at 141 pounds and was named the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2017, leads the pack of Mizzou contingent in men’s freestyle wrestling. The Tiger sophomore will wrestle at 66 kg (143 pounds), a bracket which features Junior World Silver medalist and current Ohio State wrestler Joey McKenna. Eierman and McKenna faced off at the 2017 NCAA Championships, where Eierman upended the No. 3 seed McKenna (then at Stanford) by a major decision, 8-0, to derail his All-America hopes.

Koelling is set to compete on both days of the trials, first in Greco Roman competition (85 kg/187 pounds) on Saturday, then freestyle (86 kg/189 pounds) on Sunday. The Tiger freshman represented the United States this past August in Finland at the Junior World Championships, where he wrestled at 84 kg (185 pounds) in Greco Roman. Koelling dominated the competition at the U.S. Open in April to earn his spot on the National Team, winning four matches by a combined score of 33-6. He will be up against tough competition in Rochester, as two-time NCAA National Champion and three-time NCAA finalist Gabe Dean (Cornell) has entered the field at 85 kg. Following Greco Roman wrestling, Koelling will wrestle again at 86 kg in freestyle wrestling.

Freshmen Punke and Raschka, both who have yet to make their Mizzou debut, will wrestle in freestyle competition on Sunday. Punke, who will wrestle at 57 kg (125.5 pounds), won two state titles at Washington Community High School in Washington, Ill., and was two-time Junior Greco World Team member in 2015 and 2016. Raschka, who will wrestle at 86 kg (189 pounds), was a two-time state champion at Pewaukee High School in Pewaukee, Wis.

Also wrestling on Sunday will be Mayes, a three-time NCAA All-American and NCAA Finalist for Mizzou in 2017. Mayes, who recently accepted a spot on the Clarion coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach, will wrestle at 70 kg (154 pounds).
