Baker university

DES MOINES, Iowa – 184 pound Jarid Price became the first-ever NAIA Regional Champion for Baker University this past weekend at the NAIA Central Regionals.

As a team, Baker finished in fourth place behind No. 1 Grandview, No. 12 Missouri Valley College, and No. 5 Oklahoma City University. Baker currently sits at No. 7 nationally.

Heavyweight Brandon Gebhardt advanced all the way to the finals before bowing by pin to Grandview’s Eric Thompson. By far the most compelling match of the day was at 184 pounds where Jarid Price faced teammate Robert Shadrach with the title at stake. Price won by a decision over Shadrach, of Kearney MO 6-5.

Senior Jarell Price finished in third at 149 pounds after falling to TJ Moen of Grandview in the semifinals, while Bo Newport, Joel Olivas, Nick Haugen, and Dylan Berg all placed fourth in their respective weight classes.

“I was extremely proud of our effort,” said head Baker wrestling coach Jimmy May. “The Central Region is extremely tough and to place eight guys in the top four was a tremendous accomplishment. We now set our focus on preparing for the NAIA National Championships.”

The 55th Annual Wrestling National Championships will take place March 1-3 in Des Moines, Iowa. The official list of NAIA National Championship qualifiers will be announced on Feb. 23.
