EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. — For the second time in three years, Cameron wrestling bested its MEC rivals as it won the Class 2 District 4 tournament Saturday at Excelsior Springs High School.
It became a tight team race down the stretch on Saturday between Cameron and the hosts, Excelsior Springs, with both teams sending an abundance of wrestlers to the state tournament in Columbia. With 193 team points, the Dragons ended up sending 10 wrestlers to the state tournament that will take place beginning Thursday at Columbia’s Mizzou Arena.
All 10 of those athletes are underclassmen.
Cameron coach Phillip Limb said earlier in the day he expected Chillicothe to make a run at the title.
“I knew it would be a tight team race,” Limb said. “I kind of thought Excelsior, Chillicothe and Benton would all be in the hunt with us. We were a little discouraged after (Friday) night, but we came in strong (Saturday). They’ve had a lot of adversity this year like the weather, but of course everybody has. They’re a really tight-knit group, which is good. Everybody will be returning (next year).”
