Lawson and Lathrop again appear set to play the role of favorite in Class 1 District 4. In 2018, Lawson left with the team title only for second-place Lathrop to usurp the the Cardinals the following week in the Class 1 Missouri State Wrestling Championships team standings.
In fact, Lathrop ended up fourth at state to finish fourth, earning the second team trophy in program history and first since placing third in 2012.
Lawson meanwhile faded to seventh at state, and the Cardinals might again have the depth to top the 15-team District 4 field but might lack the top-end firepower to keep up with Lathrop at state.
Currently, Lathrop ranks No. 3 in the Missouriwrestling.com Class 1 team rankings with Lawson right behind in fourth. The two teams now account for the last four team trophies and five of the last six for the current District 4 teams.
Both could have a shot at the top four this year, but seeding out of district might play a big part in determining the final outcome.
To make matters more difficult, District 4 lost Summit Christian Academy, Lone Jack and St. Michael the Archangel from the last two year cycle. Gallatin, Hamilton and Polo rejoin the mostly KCI/Grand River Conference setup and provide some added depth.
