CBC Cadets travel to Ohio for the Walsh Ironman

The Christian Brother College Cadets traveled to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio over the weekend for the toughest high school tournament: The Walsh Ironman. Although the Cadets came home empty-handed, they know what to work on.

Head Coach for the 2x returning team state champs Cornell Robinson says, “Overall we have a lot to work on. That’s the fun part of this sport. You never have the puzzle figured out. But it is so fun trying to solve and put it together. This experience should change the mindset of our team!”

Freshman Santino Robinson came away with the most wins for the Cadets, finishing the weekend with a 3-2 record. Santino lost first round by a quick fall but battled back with three straight victories before losing to 8th seeded Richard Hough 13-8.

“Satino had a rough start but showed a lot of heart and battled back. Travel and all the adversity that comes with being a top-notch high school wrestler takes time to get used to. Knowing how to manage everything. Hopefully, he will learn,” says Head Coach Cornell Robinson.

Vinny Zerban entered the tournament with the most hype for the Cadets but was only able to come away with a 2-2 record at the stacked 152 weight class only losing his matches 4-2 in SV1 and a 6-3 loss to end the tournament, including a loss to #4 seed Brayden Roberts in the quarterfinals.

Head Coach Cornell Robinson speaks about Vinny managing the long weekend plus travel, “Same thing with Vinny managing weight and travel is a tough part of the sport. If these guys want to make a world team they have to get use to being under hard travel and making weight at the same time. But as a coach, I love his competitive spirit. I think he will bounce back fine.”

Lucas White traded wins and losses with few points in between. Losing 2nd round 4-2SV1 and 6-3 to end the tournament, Lucas will need to compete better in every position in the wrestling match. He always comes to fight.

Sophomore, Jack Darrah, came away with a 2-2 record at the 182 weight class. Darrah, the 9th seeds lost to the 8th seed in the quarterfinals before ending his day with a 11-4 loss to Dominic Solis from McDonogh. “Jack’s take away is to realize he’s in the match with everyone. Knowing how to raise his intensity in matches and practice,” adds Head Coach Cornell Robinson.

The Cadets have been in travel mode the last two weeks from their tournament at the Cliff Keen Independence Invitational in Iowa and the Walsh Ironman in Ohio and will continue to be on the road as The Cadets have a quad scheduled for December 21st in Washington, Illinois before heading across the river again to the Red Schmitt Holiday Tournament, in Granite City, Illinois. This is another tough tournament that features many of the top teams from Missouri and Illinois (28 teams scheduled to compete).
