The Butler Invitational several of the top Class 1 teams in the state including; Knob Noster, Butler, Warsaw, and Lathrop. In addition, a team from Rogers, Arkansas made an appearance and did not disappoint. All five of the afore mentioned teams had a strong showing at this weekends’ tournament and came away with several finalists.
There was a mixed bag of brackets for this tournament depending upon how many wrestlers were in each weight class. There were a few classes that were a straight round robin, a couple had round robin with the winner of each pool wrestling for the championship, and a number of others were championship brackets. The matches that I have highlighted as the finals are either the actual finals of the brackets, or they are the matches that ultimately decided who came away with gold.
There were a surprising number of upsets in this tournament, including a total of 14 unranked wrestlers making it to the finals. That being said, the finals did not lack for excitement.
106: Sam Wilhelm, Knob Noster (19-2) vs. Jason Strope, Fatima (11-2)
The fact that neither Wilhelm nor Laux are ranked, speaks to the quality of wrestlers we have at this weight-class in Class 1. Both wrestlers entered with impressive records, but it was Wilhelm who handed Laux his third loss of the season with a Major Decision.
113: Cole Ritter, Adrian (19-2) vs. Lucas Laux, Fatima (12-1)
As in the last bout, neither of these wrestlers entered the day in the top 6 of the state rankings.
