KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Daniel Lewis kneeled next to his coaches before the pivotal moment. Few instructions were needed.

On a special night for Missouri’s homegrown wrestlers, Lewis went to the mat with a clear objective: technical fall or pin. The No. 6-ranked Tigers needed a dramatic pin in the final match of a dual with Virginia on Thursday, Dec. 20 at Park Hill High School.

For the first time in more than a decade, Missouri traveled off campus for a home dual, and Lewis sent the pack-to-capacity crowd home happy with a first-period pin in the 174-pound match — the closer. The Tigers entered down four and in need of bonus points to avoid what seemed an unlikely upset two hours earlier.

“When I was sitting with Daniel before the match, he was complaining that we were ending the (dual) at 174 pounds,” Missouri coach Brian Smith said.
