Big Weekend of Wrestling

2It was a big weekend of wrestling to start off the pre-season. Locally we had the Fall Brawl at Staley High School, which featured over 70 state medalist. The Super 32 Challenge, in Greensboro, North Carolina had over 30 Missouri wrestlers. The Night of Conflict 2 took place at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where Missouri wrestlers went 2-1. Team Missouri Girls took 6th place out of 201 teams at Conflict at the Carver in Iowa and 4th at the Midwest Mat of Dreams Dual Tournament in Bettendorf, Iowa.

We’ll start off at Super 32s. This is considered by many the toughest pre-season folkstyle tournament in the nations. Missouri brought 30 wrestlers to this grueling tournament. When you look at a bracket and see “Round of 256” you know it’s going to be a marathon and who’s been putting in work.

Missouri came away with six medalist at Super 32s:

High School

  • 120: 5th place, Joshua Saunders, CBC
  • 126: 8th place, Weston DiBlasi, Greater Heights/Park Hill
  • 132: 5th place, Devin Schwartzkopf, Francis Howell Central
  • 160: 2nd place, DJ Shannon, CBC

Middle School

  • 128: 3rd place, Tyson Moore, Greater Heights
  • 80: 8th place, Cael Keck, Greater Heights

The Night of Conflict 2 took place Friday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, in Iowa City, Iowa with Missouri Wrestlers Connor Brown (Oak Grove), Niko Chavez (Willard) and Kyran Hagan (Eureka) wrestling in this event.

Connor Brown of Oak Grove started the night off for Missouri wrestlers with a huge pin at 5:18. Connor was up 15-6 before the pin. Next up was Niko Chavez of Willard. Niko lost a very tough match 7-4. Niko scores an escape at the start of the 3rd period to tie up the match 4-4, but ends up giving up a takedown and stall call for the 7-4 decision. Kyran Hagan of Eureka ends the night of Missouri wrestlers with a 2-0 decision victory. Kyran scores a reversal in the 2nd period for the only points in the match. Going into this match, Kyran was ranked #6 by Flo and his opponent, Anthony Madrigal (Oak Park River Forest, Ill.) was ranked #5.

The Fall Brawl took place at Staley High School on Saturday, October 15th. With over 70 state medalist, the Fall Brawl is always a great pre-season tournament.

In the high school division, Tyler Stegall of Northwest lions took first place at the 138 weight class defeating Jake Turner of Bentonville, Arkansas. Jake took 2nd last year in class 6A-7A in Arkansas.

State champ, Brock Mauller of Eierman Elite Wrestling Club, dominated the 145 weight class with a 19-5 major decision over David Marlow of Purler Wrestling Academy.

At 170, Charley Genisio of Staley High School, took home the gold on his home mat with a 3-2 decision over Daniel Butler of Leavenworth Takedown Club.

Ottis Peeler of Raytown South took home the gold at 182 over Ryan Yarnell of Windsor High School by 3-2 decision.

Team Missouri Girls collectively finished 6th out of 201 teams at Conflict at Caver Saturday and both the youth and high school finished 4th in the championship bracket of Midwest Mat of Dreams Dual Tournament Sunday, our first time putting a dual team together. Nonnie Justice and Lilly Brower won tournament titles and Nonnie was named Outstanding wrestler.  Out of 8 matches two tournaments Lilly Brower only gave up 2 points for the whole weekend.
