The Meramec wrestling
team just returned from a successful trip to the NJCAA
Nationals in Rochester MN. The following is a summary of the team's
performance.
Adam Vogt: 133 lbs: Was ranked as high as #5 during the regular
season, Adam
had a disappointing trip, finishing 0-2 at the tournament. Adam
made great
strides during the year and we expect him to bounce back even stronger
next
year.
Riley Baker: 141 lbs: a former state champion from Eureka, Riley
advanced to
the Nationals by defeating a wrestler he had lost to twice during
the
season. Riley had a tough draw at the National Tournament and finished
0-2
there. He has already started working on ways to improve for the
2003-2004
season.
Edward Schander: 157 lbs: a natural 149 lb wrestler, the Miami
OK native
(via Germany) did a nice job wrestling up a weight while adjusting
to
collegiate style wrestling. Edward's Greco-Roman skills and sharp
mind for
wrestling will make him a force to be reckoned with next season.
Mark Dickman: 149 lbs: the 3x state champ from Hannibal H.S. grew
by leaps
and bounds this season. He finished the year with 38 wins and defeated
the
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th place finishers at this year's nationals
either
during the season or at the tournament. Mark's mat sense and improvement
both defensively as well as riding made a huge difference in his
success.
Mark has his sights set on the National Title next season and will
be
working hard to reach his goal.
Ryan Luna: 174 lbs: a former state runner up from Paducah KY, Ryan
started
out the season going 11-8 against primarily 4 year competitors.
He closed
the season with an 18 match winning streak, losing only in the national
final. He won 3 matches by major decision at the National tournament,
and
defeated a former Cadet World Champion in the National Semifinals.
Ryan will
be the preseason favorite at his weight class and is looking to
take one
step up on the podium next February.
Nick Vogt: 125 lbs: a 2x National runner up, Nick is the winningest
wrestler
in Meramec's history. Nick personifies the type of young man you
want to
have in your program: hard working, honest, dependable, academically
excellent and a winner on and off the mat. Nick will be continuing
his
career at a 4 year instituition next season. We wish all of the
best and
know that he will be a fantastic addition to some fortunate wrestling
program.

who
have supported the program this year. We are expecting bigger and
better
things next season.
