Keenan Hagerty Named Male Athlete of the Year at Maryville University
The Maryville University department of athletics held its annual Recognition Night Wednesday evening in the University Auditorium. Senior golfer Kayla Eckelkamp was named the Female Student-Athlete of the Year, and freshman wrestler Keenan Hagerty was selected the Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
Eckelkamp has won 19 tournaments in her career and has ranked as high as fourth nationally in stroke average. She owns the school record for 18-, 36-, 54- and 72-hole scoring records. Eckelkamp was the GLVC Women’s Golfer of the Month September 2011 and March 2012. She has been a second-team All-American, was selected All-Scholar by the NGCA and has been a three-time Academic All-GLVC selection.
As a true freshman, Hagerty posted a 33-7 record, including seven wins via falls, this season. He became Maryville’s first wrestling All-American and reached the finals of the 149-pound division at the National Championship.
University President Dr. Mark Lombardi and Dr. Nina Caldwell, Maryville’s Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, addressed the nearly 300 student-athletes, coaches, staff and University members to begin the evening. Former Saints women’s basketball player and current Maryville assistant coach Megan McCabe also spoke to the attendees. SAAC Vice President Julie Jouglard introduced the 2012 SAAC Choice Award recipient, J.B. Connoley, the “Voice of the Saints”, who has been broadcasting Saints athletics events for four years. Darrel Kern and Phil Campbell from the University’s Physical Plant department were announced by director of athletics Marcus Manning as the recipients of the Athletics Appreciation Award.
