Greco-Roman is starting to become something other than wrestling really fast...
The goal is to promote more action and scoring - I like the idea of the changes and the thoughts behind them, just not the timing. Untill the scoring changes like these are seen as nessary in Greco
I am confused by these changes. It seems to be more like wrestling someone who is blind. You must maintain contact at all times? Lets say Wrestling Doc and Jeremy are wrestling and at the end of one and a half minutes Doc is ahead one to nothing. What happens? As everyone can tell I am totally confused. That shouldn't surprise anyone. I spend most of my life in a fog.
If I am up 1 to 0 on Jeremy Baker at any point in a match, it is because he turned Ray Charles. Otherwise, I don't have a chance. I've see him wrestle many times. Boy is bad on the mat!!
I am not sure the new rules are good for a smaller kids like my son. GR is already a power wrestler's game. Also, I don't like the timing of this just before the Olympics. Is this an attempt to slow down the U.S. just when we are learning how to win at the International level again? I really don't know. Looks like to me there will likely be many more 5's for the guys with the big muscles.
My son looked at the rules and said WHAT????????????????? We will learn the new rules and practice them with Mayabb and Baker but it took me a while to allow my son to wrestle GR anyway. At this point, since he'll be a small 26er this summer, I'm not sure we will ever do so again.
This is how more of the GR matches might look with the new rules. Watch from 3:10 until the end:

What I didn't finish saying on the video is "That's why I don't want my baby wrestling GR" even though I know it has helped him to become a better wrestler.
After watching the videos of the Open it didn't seem like the rules made drastic changes in the wrestling- if anything it appeared there was more points scored on the feet (just from the matches i watched)... At the JR and Cadet levels I'm not sure what the impact is going to be... I can see it working 2 different directions- With the forced contact it might open a wider gap between the average greco wrestler and the very good ones. On those same levels there are also kids who have had a lot of success b/c they are very good in Par Ter (or very good lifters) These rules might be beneficial for kids who are a little better on their feet to close the gap on the Par Ter studs. But after this season and the Olympics I am sure we will be dealt a new set of rules to adapt to...
Yes to everything you have said J. I haven't seen the open videos yet but the thoughts you have expressed are what I was thinking in during my above statement about the smaller wrestler and the posting of the video to show what happens when there is so much contact with a stronger more experienced thrower. The stronger more skilled guys will be doing more lifting and throwing under the new rules. There will likely be many more 5's. We could hear them going on throughout the room in Oklahoma City. The 5's make a distinct sound. I believe that the new rules will not only increase the probability of the 5's but bring with it an increase in the risk for injury.
What's the big deal? It's just GRECO!!!! It's not like it's Freestyle. I know I'm on Coach Mayhab's list for that one. LOL
Gladiator, I would avoid Staley for awhile if I were you! Merry Christmas also!!! Yes, I really said that instead of Happy Holidays.
