Haven't heard of beach wrestling? Google "Beach Wrestling" and see the next Olympic Sport being competed on the West and East Coast Beaches. Beach wrestling is recognized the world over as a wrestling style, much like Greco-Roman and Freestyle, only this time it is played on the sand rather than the traditional wrestling match. This comes after FILA, the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles based in France, sanctioned it in 2004 following the Athens Olympics.

According to the FILA website, beach wrestling was created ‘in order to bring together all the different traditional wrestling styles practiced on sand to make them more popular worldwide’. And popular they have been. The sport has taken off tremendously in the USA, Europe, Africa, Asia and other parts of the world.

And now for the first time, is being introduced to St Louis on May 16, 2009.

The competition area is composed of a 6-meter circle. The rules are simple: to win the match, the wrestler must keep his opponent’s shoulders on the ground (victory by fall), bring him to the ground twice (takedown) or push him out of the competition area twice (out of bounds). A match usually lasts three minutes maximum. FILA says ‘this new wrestling style is very popular and contributes to wrestling being more accessible and festive’. While beach wrestlers generally wear swim suits during competitions overseas, “Men can wear shorts, while ladies can wear training tops or t-shirts with shorts or tights

We had such a favorable response to St Louis Beach Wrestling that we've scheduled another event on June 20th. The next event will be at Concord Sand Volleyball, 11801 Tesson Ferry Road, St. Louis, MO 63128 (in the Concord Lanes and Arizona maxi-golf complex) for the low entry fee of $15. Weigh-ins and check in from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Wrestling begins at 6:00 pm for All divisions (Male and Female). 4-man round robin format will be used. More information and hopefully videos of the event this Saturday will be posted shortly.
