Conquistadors

OK, so I’m a wrestling fanatic. I don’t deny it. So with the 2005-06 season now more than half over, I couldn’t help but wonder about what next season looks like. To that end I wanted to rank this year’s wrestlers without seniors. I used the January 23rd Wrestling Report Rankings (because it ranks top 30) as a basis (I started this last week), but looked elsewhere (WIN, AWN, and Intermat) to ascertain year-in-school (by the way, it isn’t unusual for publications to disagree on someone’s school year). Also, a few non-seniors that do not appear in WR appear in one of these other publications, so I added these guys where I thought they belonged. For some wrestlers I had to go to school websites to find year-in-school/eligibility data. The only school for which I could not find a roster was Air Force.
Please note that I fully understand that this approach has several shortcomings. Not included below are current freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are currently redshirting or currently injured and thus not-ranked, wrestlers who will change weights for next season (e.g., I bet Poeta will drop to 157 and Herbert will go up to 184), and current sophomores and juniors who are not starters. And one never knows who might get a sixth year. But even with these caveats, it is interesting (ok, interesting to me) to see what next year might look like. Note that 184 really clears out: 7 of top 11 ranked wrestlers are graduating. First are weight-by-weight lists, followed by team rankings. I apologize for any errors in omission or arithmetic errors.

A few interesting results: Minnesota is scary, Missouri and Penn State have legitimate shots at a team trophy, Illinois will be in a re-building year, and Lehigh drops off the charts.
