Here is a discussion that can be applied to any program in class 1. I am going to use Marceline as an example because that is what brought up the discussion.

How do you compare teams in the class 1 era to the same program in the 1A-2A era? What things do you have to consider? Can you go by overall finish in state? If you do that do you take out the teams thatare now in Class 2? Or do you put them heads up in a dual and predict match by match to see who is the better team?

I was discussing with some people, the better team in Marceline's history. (I will only look at recent teams since I do not know about teams too far back) We were comparing the 96-97 team and the 99-00 team to this year's team. I take the side that the team finish determines how good a team is. If Marceline wins it this year I will consider them a better team that 99-00 which placed 4th, and better than the 96-97 team which didn't place. In the 99-00 instance though, the 3 teams above Marceline are all now in class2. I do not remember how the team did in 96-97 but there is no doubt that with out the class 2 wrestlers, the results would have been way different. The other side of the argument says look at the teams and line them up in a hypothetical dual. We were in agreement that if you did this, the 96-97 team would beat both the 99-00 team and the 05-06 team.

How do you compare teams from different years? Can you compare them? What things need to be considered?

The '97 team was 5th behind Oak Grove, PC, PHill and Odessa I'm pretty sure. All of which are class 2 now. And you are right the 97 team would destroy both the teams you mentioned. Two other good teams were 94-95 and 95-96 both placed 5th behind relatively the same 4 teams. If there were 4 classes then (glad there wasnt) Marceline would have had an impressive run for about 6-8 years.

Easy wardy, you might have left out Lawson finishing ahead of you. I'm not 100% sure but you might look it up.

if you take oak grove, odessa, platte county, p-hill, and micds out you never know wich teams would bump around because i know marceline would have had at least one more finalist in steven colbert. and you never know with derick moudy, gladbach, eric nolan, my self, and lee schreiner all had the potential to make it to the finals if the brackets would have fell different. i would also say the 97-98 team would beat this team as well the 99-00 team because i lost to tolen from oak grove, eric nolan lost to a kid from mapel woods richmond heights who is now in class 2, derick moudy lost to lowe from oak grove all in the semi's so there would have been 3 finalist with the potential of adam nolan and brad gladbach of being finalist if the brackets fell different with those teams out of the mix.

I should have known that. I was going from memory which doesnt always serve me right. Plus I never like to remember the matches that I had against Lawson. Lawson would have had several years at the top as well. Lawson and Trenton were really the only teams that we saw during the regular season that could beat us in tourny's.

if eric nolan lost to a kid from mapel woods richmond heights who is now in class 2.

Maplewood Richmond Heights is still class 1

I may be in the minority here. I look at how the teams do against the competition they face. If a team wins state I would tend to rank them above one who does not. Not always but a majority of the time.

1. I wouldn't be crowning Marceline team champs just yet.

2. I wonder how this team would be competing if there was still a 3 class system - as in the other years listed. The following teams would be in Class 1 if there was (based on 208 schools w/ wrestling):
Platte County 676
Chillicothe 671
Pleasant Hill 656
Buffalo 642
Dexter 632
Reeds Spring 627
Owensville 622
Monett 589
Oak Grove 584
Grain Valley 572
St. Pius X (K. City) 569
Seneca 567
John Burroughs 549
Pembroke Hill 549
Smithville 546
Central (Park Hills) 542
Herculaneum 536

I have not watched enough wrestling this year to be crowning anyone champs. I was watching Marceline this weekend and the question just came up of where do they rank. That led me to the more general question for all teams. How do you compare teams of different years?

It's pretty hard when the # of classes changes. Winning state now is a LOT different than winning state in...say...'97.

I will go back a bit. My Boonville team in 1988 beat Centralia 11 of 13 weights, but when we went to qualifying we only got two through and they got 11 through to State. moral of the story.......

depends on the district.....
depends on how the kid is wrestling that day......
depends on the competition.........
depends on sickness, nerves, or injury
depends on the draw

you talk about the toughness of this super district......try Going to Lexington on a tuesday and wrestle one match...win you go, or lose and your done.....then starting state on a Thursday of the same week. Now that was trying on both coaches and kids. But oh the stories that were made from those days.

Have you ever noticed that old wrestlers are like fine wine, the older they are the better they get/were.

IT SEEMS THAT THE OLD DAYS WILL ALWAYS BE LOOKED AT AS HARDER...
WE USED TO WRESTLE WITH NO ARMS AND LEGS... KIDS TODAY WANT TO QUIT BECAUSE OF A HANG NAIL... CLASS 1A-2A WAS TOUGH, 3A WAS MEAN, 4A WAS RUTHLESS... MOST OF THE ATHLETES(AS WE WERE CALLED) WRESTLED WITH LIFE THREATENING AILMENTS... IT WAS BRUTAL!
