I know it is still early but now with the two biggest tournaments in the season over does anyone have any good state predictions.

You may not have heard of them, but I'd look for Oak Park to win it. :-D

The battle will be most likely for 3rd. No doubt Oak Park wins by a landslide in the team scores. Can anyone challenge FZW for 2nd place?

RP-in-Nebraska

Maybe Blue Springs.

Maybe Northwest.

Just curious how many wrestlers does anyone think Northwest and Howell C. will place and at what weights? How many placers will it take to take home a 3rd or 4th place trophy? I dont see to many teams with more than 2 state placers on it. Except Oak Park and FZW.

RP-in-Nebraska

Gagliano will be back and I say at 135. That will make it tough for Blue Springs or Francis Howell Central to catch them. Last time I ran the numbers from the rankings, here is how it came out:
205 Oak Park Total
122 Ft. Zumwalt West Total
83 Francis Howell Central Total
81 Northwest Total
72 Blue Springs Total
I awarded the minimum points for each medal based on their current rank and then gave each team one point for every qualifier using the district ranks. Two years ago the average bonus points scored at each medal was 3, FYI. Since I ran these numbers a few things have changed. Rankings will get updated today or tomorrow, I will re-run them. One more thing, I was very impressed with Blue Springs this weekend. Good show Wildcats.

What if you ran the numbers based on the Winnetonka performances? Neely, Bowman, and Bradley all have the potential to be a state champ (even if it sounds a bit far-fetched, they all showed it this weekend). Bolin might not be a champ. Although I think FZW is a clear choice for second, it could get interesting.

Hammer165

I thought BS had a great weekend aswell. Clearnence Neely will be moving up in the rankings. He beat the previously undefeated Kendall Burke and beat Koeling (spelling???) in the finals. It seems like hag always gets his kids to peak at the right time.

I think there is no way OP will scor ethat many points and I also think that FZW will score quite a bit more than you have. When I started this topic I was talking more individual state champs and the matchups we could see in the semis and finals.

Your not giving Bowman much credit for his win. No doubt it probably is a tossup but I give the Senior Bowman the edge. No doubt Oak Park could score that many team points in Columbia. Does anyone know the record for Class 4 team points?

Bob there are some pretty serious rivals to the Oak Park kids in most of the weight classes you have them winning. Whereas I think it is well within the realm of possibility all of those wrestlers could win, realistically my guess is that a few of them won't. Regardless this probably is the best line-up in state history. I think in most other eras the Fort Zumwalt West team would be going for its second team title in a row.

A darkhorse at 112 is Denson of Liberty. I have been very impressed by him. I agree Vito and Marty are the two favorites, but I could see Ziegler, Brooks or Jones making a run and bumping off a favorite. Bunch could also upset a few people, however if I had to pick an upset champion I would pick Denson.

Yes, I am no doubt about it an OP fan. Nothing new. The only teams I root for over them are Lee's Summit because my son was priveledged enough to benefit from the great coaches out there. I live in Kansas by the way. I think everyone would enjoy seeing a team sweep that many titles. Obviously you don't want your favorites to lose but after the fact, we would all be proud of them. Even their closest rival I dare say, FZW. Question for all of you. If OP get's a tournament or dual with the big boys in Illinois next year, who will you root for? I actually find myself rooting for Northwest every once in a while too. I like underdogs and they came out of nowhere last year in my opinion. They have a heck of a team this year. Good luck to them.

Oh I am definately a fan of Oak Park. It didn't start this year either. I went to Granite City two years ago just to see them wrestle. I'm proud of the successes they have had for Missouri and of course I root for them against out of State Teams. I actually made myself look stupid last year before Oak Park dualed El Reno when I went to the Oklahoma website and talked trash... only to see Oak Park get beat... oh well they got revenge this year.

I will always root for Northwest above any team of course. I've been following the program ever since the Wilhelms adopted it and turned it around from a subpar-par team to a powerhouse-and with much less little league support than most top teams have.
BTW, their dual meet record since taking it over in 2000-2001 is 86-10 (or will be after the next three duals) and this is just after the team had a dual record in one season with that many losses (10) in 1998. The sudden turn of success didn't happen by the lucky draw of little leaguers... and Northwest doesn't breach 1000+ people attending home duals by chance now either. I think most away duals the Northwest crowd still out#'s the home teams. It's quite a sight to see and I am glad for it.

Anyways, my predictions are:

103: Bradley
112: Krischke
119: Warner
125: Bolin
130: O'Donnell
135: Pepper (if Gagliano comes back... it will be hard to pick Pepper over him... but he HAS missed a lot of wrestling and might not be at his peak... so I guess I'll stay with Pepper.)

Regardless of what happens at State, I would like to see Zack come back and at least get to wrestle for a 4th state title. I think it would be sad if an injury is what kept him from competing for his last possible high school championship. I would think that anyone who enjoys wrestling regardless if they root for Zack/Oak Park or not would feel the same way. If he wins he wins, if he doesn't, he doesn't, but I would hate for an injury to be the reason that a great wrestler like Zack can't take his last shot.

The way I can see it, Francis Howell Central is either going to really shine with some upsets, or be very disappointed at State. They have a ton of very good wrestlers but most of those really good guys are in some very deep weight classes. The other weights that are relatively weak in comparison to the depth of others, Francis Howell Central isn't represented by one of their top guys. I think that could cost them at state. I see Bradley as their biggest point scorer.

Mid-South Wrangler

Yeah, I picked them as my number 4 placer over Northwest. I feel these two teams will end up the a very similar amount of total points. Bradley and Tracy are the two notable point scores for them in the tournament, and like Northwest, are pretty solid up and down. If V Krischke doesn't score close to the maximum he can, I think Northwest we be in the same boat.

I have a question.

How come everybody seems to think that Scott O'Donnell and Reid Garcia are going to be in the finals at 130?

What about Devin Graham and John VanVelkinburgh(spelling?)? Either one or both of them could possibly be in the finals. As long as O'Donnell and Garcia are on the same side of the bracket. Even if not VanVelkinburgh may take Garcia or O'Donnell. And Graham could have a great match with Garcia if they met in the semis. So that is just food for thought.

O'Donnell smoked VanVelkinburgh 13-5 at the Granite City tournament. Louden and anyone else that saw that match would probably agree that VanVelkinburgh is not on the level of Scotty O. I personally have never seen Garcia wrestle so I can't say one way or the other with him, but VanVelkinburgh's only shot at the state finals is if O'Donnell is on the other side of the bracket, in my opinion.

Good point abotu Garcia.. plus he hasn't been near as dominant this year as he has in the past two years. I don't know if he is sick, having trouble cutting weight, or just isn't as into wrestling. Or maybe he isn't handling the added weight as well. Who knows. Last year he only had two losses for the entire year and only lost to O'Donnell both times. This year he has losat to a number of kids, some of them not ranked in the top 6.

You guys are all counting Joe Wolfrum out. I know he has lost to Garcia, VanVelkinberg, and O'Donnell, but they were all close matches, he had VanVelkinberg beat at GAC, he lost by 1 and 2 to O'Donnell. He has been very surprising this year and I think he has a pretty good shot at being a finalist.

You lost me on that one, RB. When did VanVelkinburgh have a much closer match with O'Donnell? They only met in the finals at G.C.

All I remember is that VanVelkinburgh was PISSED when he lost that match, but I remember Scotty O taking shots at will...was kind of amazing, actually.

The finals of Day 1, O'Donnell beat VanVelkinberg 4-1.

To go back to Louden's post about Garcia... there are several different styles of wrestling and each has it ups and downs against the other styles and not drawing attention to Garcia but everyone for that matter needs to work on certain things pertaining to certain styles of wrestling. I can assure you that Garcia will be ready for state, first comes districts. So I would by no means count him out.

Definitely don't count him out. In fact I was hoping you would weigh-in on the subject Patriotfan. Garcia went from being about as definite a top 3 placer as you could have last year, to being a questionable placer this year based upon losses to Smart, Harris, and Rodgers. Those three wrestlers are by no means weak, they are all studs, but on paper each one of those appeared to be outmatched by Garcia. I also know he has victories over 2 of the 3 as well, but the whole point was that none of this happened last year, not even once. It's happened three times this year and one has to wonder if maybe there is trouble with the higher weight class, or something else.

Statistically he may "seem" a questionable placer but those are just numbers. I'm sure I wasn't thought to be a placer and I came away with a medal. At this point all the statistics says is the seeding, when it really matters (state) Reid will show us all what he's been working so hard for. Its possible that the jump in weight could be a factor but I can't say with assurance.
