View Full Version : Couture vs Lesnar

Who are you picking?
I am torn on this fight, because back before Couture jumped off of the UFC ship, and when Brock was doing the whole WWE thing, Couture was hands down my favortie. But Brock is an exciting fighter, with all the tools, although he lacks the experience which Coututre obviously owns. Coututre owns the ground game, while after seeing Lesnar's stand up vs Heath Herring I almost want to call it a draw, and I give a slight edge in wrestling to Lesnar, but I believe he will have a tough time taking Coututre down. Stamina shouldn't be an issue for either fighter, so I can't factor that into the equation. I'm gonna go out on a limb, and pick Lesnar by decision.

I don't think Brock will have any trouble taking Randy down because he is so much bigger then Randy. I would give the submissions advantage to Randy but I think they're even on the ground again going back to size if Brock gets Randy down it could be hard for Randy to escape. I pick Brock in a not so close decision.

Lesnar TKO in the 2nd round.-OR-. I think the further it goes the better for Randy. I wouldn't be a bit surprised with a decision going to Randy either. Im excited for this one!

For you guys to question the fighting skill Randy Couture has below Lesnar, you guys are crazy. Don't forget lesnar lost to frank mir a guy couture would destroy based on pure talent. If Lesnar lands a luck one two, that will be the only way couture loses this fight

still worried about brock handling the submission game his overaggressiveness cost him the mir fight i think he will do plenty of damage but couture will catch him and make brock tap

The only factor IMO Randy has to worry about is Brocks size and power. I think Brock may pose problems early but I see Randy's ability to scramble, get back to his feet, and impose a stronger striking game to be the factor. Then again, he is 45 and hasn't fought in 15 months.

Yeah, Brock was overaggressive in his first fight in the Cage vs Mir. He was caught in a submission and I believe he learned from that as evident in his fight against the the Texas Crazy horse, when he basically rode him out for 3 rounds and was never in any visible trouble. I admit this knowing Herring doesn't have nearly the same ground game as Mir. I also agree with Louden and I think Lesnar will have a tough time keeping Randy down on the mat. I just hope the fight lives up to the hype. I think the last time the UFC has promoted a fight like this was Liddell-Ortiz II. Not quite sure on the validity of the sources, but I read somewhere that Lesnar's camp brought in Royce Gracie to work on his ground game with him. I highly doubt this but if it is true, his ground game and submission defense should be vastly improved.

Looked like Randy brought a pretty good strategy. His usual press them against the fence and dirty box. Lesnar was just too big. I guess when you take 30 cycles of the juice you tend to get large. Im sure there are lots of other UFC guys who have taken steroids prior to entering the organization. Brock Lesnar is the epitomy of a roid head. I dont like anything about that guy. Why dont we just get Bill Goldberg, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and The Ultimate Warrior to start fighting in the UFC as well. Boring and barbaric. Id rather watch Kenny Florian and BJ Penn fight a thousand times than watch that Oger throw haymakers on guys 50 lbs lighter than him. Just my opinion. I am in no way an MMA expert or commentator. Just my observation...

Randy couldn't take Lesnar down which is why he lost. Brock was dominant. Frank Mir would beat Randy. He is very talented.

I must have missed when Lesnar tested positive for steroids??? Also, Lesnar is a great athlete. He isn't boring at all... You must be thinking of a different guy.

Your right, he's all natural. What was I thinking! What makes him a great athlete? The fact that he's huge? Remember how his NFL tryout worked out? He simply overpowered a 45 year old man 50 lbs lighter than him. Sorry, not exciting or impressive IMO. Watching him fight reminds me of the low budget tough man competitions before UFC blew up with beer bellied rednecks swinging for the fences.

Unless you have a positive test, the yes he is all natural. Anyone who makes it to final cut on an nfl team is a great athlete!

Can he run the 110m High Hurdles? Can he Pole Vault? Can he make a left handed layup or rain down 3 pointers? Can he throw the out route or drag his toes to stay in bounds? Can he hit a curve ball? To me these are things and "athlete" can do. A giant mass of testosterone doesnt make you an athlete. He's big, strong and fast. Not a "great" athlete.
Great athletes: Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Bo Jackson, Michael Phelps, John Smith, Deion Sanders
Brock Lesnar? Come on, get off his jock.
Especially since the guy hand't played competitive football since high school.
Exactly, he got a try out because he was DIV 1 National Champ and a WWE superstar. It was a promotional stunt. He had no chance in hell of playing professional football. Much like Jordan trying to play baseball. If that was anyone else, they would have never got the tryout to begin with, let alone get to embarass themselves in the minors for several games...
Sorry, we will agree to disagree. I think Lesnar's a meathead.

Lesnar is just bigger than Couture, Couture should just drop down to light heavy and take the belt, and plus the guys like 45. Lesnar is going to be a great fighter in a year or two tho.

Your quote doesn't make much sense.... Can ALL of the athletes you mentioned do ALL of the above? Not sure if Jordan or Gretzky can pole vault or run the 110 hurdles in a good time. I can pick this apart anyway you want, but Athletes are usually sport specific. Peyton Manning is slow and couldn't catch an out route, but he's a great qb. We can go on and on. Your point is not valid...

Ok, Manning cant hit the curve. I was trying to get a point across. Throwing haymakers and bum rushing physically smaller competitors doesnt seem to make him a great athlete. Is he a giant stud? Duh! Is he a Great Athlete? I dont think we will see him on Sports Century's top 50 anytime soon.

Cael Sanderson went 159-0 in college, including four consecutive NCAA titles (1999-2002) and was the first NCAA wrestler to go undefeated with more than 100 wins. Sports Illustrated named his college career as the No. 2 most outstanding achievement in college history. He was also the 2003 World Championship silver medalist, and a three-time national freestyle champion (2001-03).After graduation from Wasatch High in 1997, Sanderson matriculated at Iowa State University. He redshirted the 1997-98 season. The following season, Sanderson won all 39 matches and the NCAA title at 184 pounds. He became the first freshman in NCAA tournament history to be named the NCAA Wrestling Team Championship's most outstanding wrestler. Sanderson continued to have success in 1999-2000. He completed the season 40-0 with another NCAA title. He also won the Dan Hodge Trophy as the nation's most outstanding college wrestler. He was the first underclassman to win the Hodge Trophy. In the off season, he won the World University title in Tokyo, Japan. As a junior, Sanderson went 40-0, raising his record to 119-0. He broke Dan Gable's record of 100 consecutive wins. He was also named outstanding wrestler in the NCAA tournament and was the first two-time winner of the Dan Hodge Trophy. Sanderson's 2001-02 campaign was a coronation of sorts. He again went undefeated at 40-0, becoming the first NCAA wrestler to go undefeated with more than 100 wins. He became the second wrestler to win the NCAA title in four consecutive years, the first being Pat Smith. He also won his third Dan Hodge Trophy as outstanding wrestler. Sanderson set the school record with 159 wins. His success brought attention even from non-wrestling fans. Sanderson was the first wrestler featured on Wheaties cereal boxes for his achievement. His final college accomplishments were a record of 159-0, 4 NCAA titles, 3 Dan Hodge Trophy awards, 4-time NCAA Outstanding Wrestler, and 4-time Big 12 Champion. After his graduation, Sanderson worked with the wrestling team at Iowa State while training for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Sanderson won gold at 84 kg (185 lb) at the 2004 Olympics, defeating Eui Jae Moon of South Korea in the finals.
Would anyone not consider Cael an athlete? Yet you wont find him in the top 50 all time? While I agree with you Wardy that Lesnar is not a world beater, I disagree with the premise that he is not an athlete.

Jeeez guys. You are putting words in my mouth and overgeneralizing my remarks. He is definitely an athlete. He won a Div 1 national title. He was a superstar in WWE which albeit, fake and douchy, requires athleticisim.
A "GREAT" Athlete he is not. That was swoletrains original remark to me. That Lesnar was great athelete. I took that as meaning he was elite, unforgettable and a world beater. I disagree with that whole heartedly.
And Sanderson absolutely belongs on that list. Lesnar doesnt sniff it.

Are you kidding me dude?! First let's make this clear, I am not defending OJ Simpson the person. The guy is a douche and deserves the worst for killing his wife (which atleast now the idiot and rot in jail for a little while) but in terms of being an outstanding athlete and football player, you are so very wrong. The guy was elected into the hall of fame in his first year of eligibility ok. He was the first running back to ever rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single season, and that was on a 14 game schedule, not the 16 game one that the NFL uses today. When he retired, he had rushed for 11,236 yards, which at the time was second on the all-time list, only behind Jim Brown. Oh yeah the dude also was a 2 time All-American in college and led the country in rushing yards as a true freshman and also as a sophmore. Not mention the fact that he won the Heisman trophy his sophmore season. OJ Simpson was one of the best running backs of all time (top 5) I think all of that stands out just a litlle bit . I'll repeat this though, I am defending OJ Simpson the running back, not OJ Simpson the murdering scumbag.

I remember watching Brock wrestle in the NCAA's when he was in college. He was huge then too. I am not sure what the weight difference is but I assume he was tested then for steriods. Overall he is a great athlete and any NCAA Div ! National Champ is aces in my book. :P
