Can anyone inform me on how much it will cost a wrestlers family to send their wrestler to Fargo, or to the National duals. To qualify they have to win their bracket in Sedalia or qualify through Southern Plains? Correct?

Also, will you need a red/blue singlet to compete? Or can you wear any color singlet you want? Hopefully no hot pink ones at this tournament!

To qualify for a dual team they need to win their bracket. The dual teams are fully funded by MO/USA, which means you don't have to pay anthing. I am not sure on the cost of Fargo this year. The state champion has a guarenteed spot on the team if they choose to go. Also, if you place top 3 in a regional you will have a spot (the regional qualifiers do not count aginst the total allotment for the state, so the more kids we have qualify through regionals, the more total kids Missouri can take to Fargo). I believe Northern Plains (Next weekend in Iowa) and Southern Plains are the only regionals left.

It's only ~2 stories high, w/ grass mounded up around the first story, entries on the second floor.

Anyone have answers to the singlet question?

Jay

Anyone have answers to the singlet question?Just to restate the obvious, if your name is listed higher than your opponent on the bracket you are supposed to show up at the mat with a red singlet, if your name is listed below your opponent on the bracket you are supposed to show up at the mat w/a blue singlet. Life is MUCH easier for the scorer/refs when that one rule is followed, however it is never enforced and anklets are available. If you just can't see buying a singlet for this tournament, --don't, but if you want to get into this 'olympic-style' wrestling, they're worth the investment.

I have very limited results. I know Amos got beat by Hunter and then Hunter got beat by Breit. Forrest won at 125 over I believe Banning. I think Skaggs and Hedrick went 3rd/4th at that same weight. Waters won at 119.

Thanks to everyone in the wrestling community who gave kuddos to Jake Cook this weekend after him coming back from a broken collar bone at State this year. I didn't get to see him this weekend due to work but heard that he wrestled tough even though he didn't win.

The officiating was beyond aweful, with exceptions to Mayhabb and Mankowich. I saw a 135 lb cadet match,in wich a kid slipped, and the other kid fell on his side and got 3 points for nothing.

As one of the new refs in question, the only way the refereeing at Freestyle State is going to get better is for there to be more people volunteer to ref Freestyle. There is a reason there is a three person system at big national events...Freestyle is very subjective and also very hard to ref. If more people in state can learn/volunteer to ref Freestyle (and Greco) then maybe our state can go to the three ref system. Believe me I have gained a whole new appreciation for Freestyle refs regardless of whether I do it again or not. Based on being in the corner and now being out there getting the arrows, in my opinion complaints against Freestyle refs fall into four categories 1. The ref made the wrong call 2. The parent/coach complaining is biased towards his own wrestler 3. The person complaining doesn't know the rules as well as they think 4. Freestyle is subjective and two different people will see a call two different ways. I think the only thing people can expect of new refs is for them to be unbiased, do the best they can, and continue to learn. After that mistakes will be made, that is just part of the learning process.

I also don't know if I accept the premise there were only two good refs at State, there were other experienced refs there that I think are very good refs, but as far as the new refs go (myself included) the only way refs are going to get better is to get experience. Just like our state's elite wrestlers weren't great overnight, neither will be our new refs. Frankly I am happy that Freestyle State has grown to the point where we need to get a three ref system if possible, especially for the Schoolboys, Cadets, and Juniors. I remember not too many years ago that there weren't that many kids at State.

Anyway that is my opinion for what's that worth. I guess for all the years I have shot the arrows from the stands and the coaches corner, it is only right that I got to learn how it feels on the receiving end.

One last comment; I respect Gary Mayabb as much as I respect anyone in the sport of wrestling, however for those dissatified with the State refereeing, it is a little disingenious comparing the other refs to Gary. Gary has wrestled at the highest levels, coached at the highest levels, and I think refereed at the highest levels...your not going to get a bunch of Gary level refs at State, ever. Heck your not going to get a bunch of Gary level refs almost anywhere; however I do think over time it is possible to get a core of good, experienced refs. Hopefully that process has already begun.

The WRESTLING was awesome! A ton of kids battling it out and doing it with dignity. As Greg has pointed out, officiating freestyle and greco is not an easy thing to do. Even if we had three man mechanics there would still be complaints. As a competitor, coach and father I have gotten the opportunity to see things from all angles. Put the referee shirt on and you see it from another angle that from the corner or the stands can not be seen. I love wrestling, that is why I officiate today. Let's not take our eye off the ball here by focusing on the thankless job of the people making the calls. The wrestling was awesome and that is what we need to look at. It was great to see some of our Juniors working the mats in the lower levels. I had the opportunity to work with Gary. What an experience! He is a great individual who I have always respected. After this weekend my respect for him has grown tenfold. My level of officiating elevated working with him and picking his brain about different situations.

And Greg, I thought you did an great job....... =D> .....!

I thought that the tournament this year was considerably tougher than in past years. The rules in both styles seem to change from year to year making it very difficult to know what is going on. I felt that the refs did a fine job considering the constant changing of rules. I often times didn't understand some of the scoring myself (I feel like I have a decent knowledge of the new rules) and found that I had to ask many questions from Coach Mayhab and the other refs. Great tournament and great weekend for Missouri wrestling !!

Most complaints come from people who do not understand the rules. The refs did their best and most importantly were fair. If there was a missed call it was because there was only one ref per mat. The effort was very good and they were willing to talk and discuss a call when it was questioned without going crazy on the coach as in missouri high school.

A majority of the officiating was terrible. Judgment calls that were questionable I let the rookies slide on, but when these 'rookie' refs let flagrant rule violations go unnoticed...thats a problem.

Just curious. What were the flagrant rules violations?

Who wins this period?
Wrestler A- 2, 3, 1, 3 = 9pts
Wrestler B- 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, = 11 pts.

I thought the officials did a fine job!!! Sure there are going to be calls you don't agree with. This happens in the Olympics and it happens at NCAAs. It happens in the NFL and MLB. I was very impressed that we have so many new guys that are learning to ref. I thought the young guys did a great job and I agree Greg did too. It was a great weekend of wrestling and it was awesome that we broke the attendance record on both days!!! That and the fact we have so many guys learning how to ref is a real positive for Missouri Wrestling. I will finish this with what I have said before on here...If your not going to grab a whistle and ref your self then quit whining. I think it is embarrassing that you would get on here and knock these guys.

I would like to thank everybody that put on the tournament!!!! I had a very fun weekend!!! It was great to get to hang out and talk with so many good people!!!

I agree that the competition was great on Saturday. I know there were some Junior brackets that were fairly loaded even with such wrestlers as Bailey, Mango, Wisdom, and Bradley not being there. That says something when some of the state's best wrestlers aren't there and the brackets are still loaded.

The USA crew always run an outstanding event. I believe the success the national teams have had the last few years has really increased the prestige of winning this tournament. It is too bad it can't be a little later in May, but unfortunately that is probably impossible as then the event would bump up against graduations and end of school year events.

On the refereeing front I appreciate the encouragement but I would give myself about a C- for Saturday, which is better than the F I gave myself after the first weekend I refereed (I wish my kids would show even that type of progress in some of their classes LOL). I am curious what flagrant rules violations were missed on Saturday. I ask not as a criticism or being touchy, I am just curious what was being missed. I do want to thank (I think LOL) Jeff Bolin for getting me involved in refereeing. Like Outlaw said, it sure gives you a different perspective. Before I hung the whistle around my neck I thought I had a good handle for the most part of the rules, however now I realize there are a lot of little things in Freestyle that I didn't understand but do now.

Thanks to all for the support, encouragement and even some of your thoughts and concerns on Refereeing. As many have mentioned I am sure we all missed something at one time or another. I even felt Coach Mayhab missed a leg foul and asked after the match what he saw and he explained why he didn't feel that it was a foul that time, but aggreed it only takes a small enfraction that can change it to a foul. During the match he had heard me say watch the blocking/traping of the ankle and made and effort as most of the Refs did to watch to see if a leg foul occured.
I have Refed several National events and felt that the crew that we had at State this weekend was as good as many officials I have worked with at the National events. Bottom line as Greg said, we are trying to train and encourage your kids and coaches to throw on the whistle and become a Ref. so that we can have a 3 man crew at the State Tourn. just as they do at the National events. Even with a 3 man crew you will have disagreements, but at least 2 of the 3 Refs will have to agree on the call before pts will be awarded. I was very please with Most coaches performances when they had a question about a call that was made. They went to the table and asked for a clairification of what they (the Ref) saw. Was also please with the Refs., most took the time to explain to the coach why they called it the way they did. Agree or disagree with the call most excepted and went back to the corner and coached. Remember coaches, you can't go to the table on every call but at least this weekend the Refs did try to answer questions for you and we all (coaches & Refs.) continue to learn each match everyday. Yes, as a coach I may not always agree with the call, but as we work our way to 3 Refs. to a mat, please encourage and promote the efforts of the men that step up and do a thankless job. Most Ref. because they love the sport and want to continue with the effort to promote the greatest and oldest sport around and help MO WRESTLING to continue to be a force that Iowa, Ill. OK. and Kan. have to deal with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To all the Refs., Coaches, Parents, Participants and Fans you did a great servise to MO WRESTLING this past weekend and all should be very proud of your efforts! Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
