COC Tournament: 1/20-1/21 at Willard.
Here are some pics from the tournament. The words between "Wrestling/" and ".jpg" is a description of the pic. If it's wrong, then my bad. PM (http://missouriwrestling.com/forum/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=218) me the correction. Or, on the description (example: "Nixa vs Ozark3"), if you know the wrestlers involved, send me a PM (http://missouriwrestling.com/forum/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=218) and I'll get their names put up.

Proctor is a sad story. A young wrestler getting better every year, has a heart problem that will hender him from doing any strenuous activity. It is a terrible thing to happen to anyone. I pray everything turns out well for this young man.

One of the most disturbing events of the night came when Branson wrestled Nixa. The head coach from Branson blantly was telling his wrestler to go after an injured shoulder on the Nixa wrestler. On several different occassions during the match he was yelling loud enough that you could hear it from across the gym for his wrestler to hammerlock the injured shoulder. At one point the Branson wrestler was working the good shoulder and the coach told him no it was the other one. It seemed to me and several other spectators he was more worried about going after the shoulder then coaching other moves. The last time I checked these wrestlers were still kids. I could see if the other wrestlers were saying it because thats kids but an adult doing it thats uncalled for. Thank God most coaches at this level have a little more intgerity than that. And you can say it was in the heat of battle but does that still make it right?

Ozark is in the driver's seat at this point. Ozark should beat Branson by at least 15 points. Stranger things have happened, but Branson will really have to bring their "A" game to make it close. I don't think Willard matches up as well with Ozark as they did with Branson.

I agree Ozark looks to be on another C.O.C. title run. Emotions were high tonight and the wrestling quality across the board is on a serious rise., for our conferance.
But I will say this, personally it looks that maybe Ozark is vonerable, looks like cracks are starting to form. And all thank God weight control will be affect next year, hopfully not to late.
Branson ????? Ill watch what I say, but for a class act school with deep tradition, please show some class, from all the negative posting to coaching to hurt other athletes ? Yea it was that obvious to everyone in the gym and im not afraid to say so.
Nixa was in there too but it was coming from upset parents listening to a coach yell at his wrestler to injure another, no cautions were givin.
Tomorrow will be another day, Willard showed tonight they also are on the rise, someone said they would have to beat the better team for the credit, well ask Branson how good they are.[/b]

We started off against Ozark in the first round. The won every match from 103 up to 171 and mianly by pins. They are very tough dual team. We came back and won at 189 (Green) 215 (Robinett) then at HWT (Noblitt) but hats off to the Ozark squad.
We had a bye in the second round the faced Buffalo and then Marshfield. I can't remember the score but we came out on top and there wasn't any upsets I believe.

Funny, I was sitting as close to Branson's bench as possible, and I never heard any of that. The only thing coming out of his mouth remotely negative was complaining about the ref's non-stalling calls and his inconsistency. The only "hammer lock" yelled was when he already had the hammer, and the coach yelled "keep that hammer." If you're that upset about the situation, maybe you should contact their A.D. instead of ranting on a message board.

I also know D squared and he is a very striaght up person.( Even if he is Texas Loud mouth  Just kidding D ) Hope it was just some kind of misunderstanding that every one can get over .
That kind of coaching may fly in the other parts of the state but we don't wrestle like that SwMo!
Sound like a other great day at the COC.

Just letting you know that Ozark took the COC championship tonight. Your little brother took the title at 160. Pinned all opponents but Duncan, Nixa (9-4) and T-fall Price, Bolivar. Take care.

No mix-up TDC. I did tell my kid to work the shoulder. That is his best offense and he went away from it.
What is ironic is that there was no Potentially Dangerous, no Flagarnts, or even stalemates called. Just good wrestling. We needed to ride to win and if that involves underhooking an opponent's bad shoulder I will yell it every time.
Nixa did not have the shoulder taped nor was he favoring the shoulder before the match or during the match. He did take a TO during the second period and rolled the shoulder out for about 20 seconds, but got right back in there with no visible side effects.
I love how this Holy Roller from Nixa wants to drop names like a coward on an internet message board instead of coming to the source.
What is even more ironic later in the match this same father was on the front row yelling to work my 152lber's sore shoulder. The same one that was injured three days prior by another Nixa wrestler in a dual.
Did his mommy get on the internet and cry? Did I once cry to your coach and ask you not to hurt my kids?
No, it is all part of wrestling.
Neither wrestler was flagrant so we did not complain. I would never have a kid flagrantly go after another's injury, but I do believe you must wrestle your match. If I have a good outside sweep and the boy's ankle is taped should I not hit my outside sweep? And as a coach do I not yell for my kid to hit an outside sweep if he doesn't?
You argue that the problem was with me yelling at him to do it. Well my kid would not hurt a flea and we obviously do not work on things like this in practice, so I felt it necessary to reassure my wrestler that he can still go after his best moves while not being dirty. If my kid would have cranked or pulled on the shoulder I could see your frustration, but go back and watch the tape we hung on for the win. We just rode him out.

It all goes back to the question, "What price victory?" So what a teenage kid is getting his injured shoulder ripped on. Isn't it ok if it's in the name of a win. Or who cares if the 152 pounder can't hardly lift his arm to wrestle. Tell him to "suck it up" and throw his season to the wind in the name of winning the dual. Those of us who heard all of this understand that the upset father was not just bothered by the quote, "Work the shoulder", but more so by the quote, "Not that shoulder, the other one." Rationalize it all you want, the entire Nixa crowd heard the truth. By the way Eagles, great tournament. If Evans and Shirey aren't sick, it's a whole different ballgame.

We all know MG is not biased. And as he said he was sitting right next to our bench. I do not have a clue who MG is and frankly I have other things to worry about.
I think a Dad gets frustrated and twists things out of context and then starts his own personal crusade and gets his crowd believing him.
But he doesn't stop there. He gets on the internet and questions some man's intergrity. That is strictly bush league.
I think your true colors come out in your last quote when you say that two of your boys were sick. You are just making excuses.
You beat us, good job. As far as my 152lber he was asked repeatedly to come out. I told him it is not worth it, he refused.
You may want to be careful before you speak for your whole crowd. We had 2 sets of parents who were over there and did not hear anything of the sort.

First Off, I know Coach Gross for years and he would never try tell
one of his kids to intentionally hurt another kid.
But if any of you think that as a wrestler you see another persons weakness and don't exploit it to your advantage (within the rules of course) is just being naive. If Coach Gross was the coach for Nixa and yelled to work the Shoulder...would you have problem?
there is nothing wrong with putting pressure on the shoulder with a Hammer Lock, Chicken Wing, Guillotine, arm bar, or Head Lever. There is nothing wrong with tha it is in rules and hard nosed wrestling. Know the difference.

I want to say thanks to Willard High School, their athletic director, their wrestling coaches and their volunteers for running a smooth tournament. The duals were the most competitive ever and I believe that 8 of the 9 conference schools had a weight class champion. Also, where else other than a wrestling tournament would you see the inter-school comradery that entertained the crowd while the coaches were sorting through the placings at the end of it all.
To "Who Wants To Know", the Ozark Wrestlers would have been in the same weight classes a year from now with weight-loss restrictions in place. Listed are our first dual weigh-ins and the weight classes wrestled at C.O.C.: (wrestler, weight on Dec. 1, weight on Jan. 20, total weight loss):
Tanner Smith, 118.2, 115, 3.2 lbs, Zach Fish, 128.2, 128, .2 lbs, Matt Vernatti, 133.5, 133, .5 lbs, Parker Jackson, 151.4, 148, 3.4 lbs, Devian Golden, 158.3, 155, 3.3 lbs, Cody Simpson, 167.9, 163, 4.9 lbs and Tony Orth 182.3 lbs, 174, 8.3 lbs. That means we averaged a 3.4 lb. weight loss over 51 days. Best luck to all as districts gets near. Mike Jackson
I am not affiliated with either program or a resident of SW Missouri.
How do you criticize a coach for instructing his wrestlers to use legal wrestling moves? If a coach feels his wrestler has a better chance of success by executing a move on one side or another I do not understanding why there is a problem.
If a wrestler is injured and legal moves will cause further injury it is the responsibility of that wrestler and his coach to prevent further injury by not wrestling, not the other team's coach.
No matter what the level of wrestling (high school, college, or international), attacking your opponent's weakness is an intergral part of this sport.

You're right, I hate each team equally.
But on a serious note, it's obvious dsquared was a little angry when he/she got home (12:30am), so they decided to start some flaming. Kind of funny how it's turned back on them. Most people on here don't take kindly to mad and ranting parents, and usually stand behind the coach.

Comments/Observations:
1-Very few wrestlers are ever 100% healthy.
A wrestler should not complain if he is injured and cannot defend legally executed wrestling techniques.
Simply default or forfeit.
2-Coach Gross is about as ethical a person as I have ever met in my life.
It is a coach's job to suggest(shout out) holds and their variations that he feels will work during a match.
Coach Gross's success at Herculaneum, Ozark, and Branson stem from his upbringing in Iowa,
where his idol was/is Dan Gable.
His philosophy is simple: WORK HARD!!!....OUTWORK YOUR OPPONENTS!!!

I have been reading this and would like to include a couple of thoughts as a non-bias observer.
1. It seems to me that it is the injured wrestlers coach and parents that have the responsibility to protect the injured wrestler, not the opposing coach. If the wrestler "can hardly lift his arm" he should not be wrestling.
2. My son was injured at a tournament this year in a finals match and his coaches decided that he should injury default, even though he wanted to continue to wrestle. He also missed two weeks because the coaches wanted him to heal completely before returning to the mat. These coaches have my complete respect and I have confidence that they are looking out for my son's best interests.
3. Maybe the disgruntled parent/person above is lashing out to blame someone else when they actually should be questioning the very coach/parents that sent the injured wrestler out on the mat.
The wrestler is either fit to wrestle or he isn't. If there is a chance that sending him onto the mat could make an injury that isn't already serious, more serious or worse yet season ending, then why take that chance, it just isn't worth it.
Just my .02 cents.

Even happens to me once or two hundred times :)
If a kid is a favoring a shoulder and I have a choice of running a half or chicken wing on the hurt shoulder or good shoulder, common sense tells me to run it on the hurt shoulder. I am trying to turn him to his back and if he is injured further in the process that is not my fault.

I wasn't there but I have talked to 4 differnt people from nixa that were there. And there all very upset and they all told me the exact same thing. Let me tell you somthing else about Nixa except for me Nixa fans are the classes bunch of people you,ll ever meet It gives me a smigin of class just by association. So if Yak offs think your going to get on here and run down nixa fans. Well coe you 10 post wonder I think you made your point. Most wrestler I know in swmo would aviod the other wrestlers injury if they could so they could say they won fair and square .
Coe = no class cheapshot.
How is attacking an injured wrestler who chooses to continue to wrestle a cheapshot?
What is not fair and square about a victory in that situation? So if kid has a taped shoulder and I run a chicken wing on the same shoulder and pin him, my victory is not fair and square?
Faulty logic.
What about Bob?
01-22-2006, 07:32 PM
In my opinion:
I dont think that the problem is the kid running any move on the injured body part, but the fact that the Coach was yelling for his wrestler to specifically attack the injury on a 14-18 yr old KID. I believe the coach's intent to be unethical and bush league, not the fact that the Branson wrestler hitting a move.
How amazing is it that a 40 yr old man can actually hope injury on a child just so that his team can win a dual?? That is what this amounts to. Don't coach to further injure someone... coach the kid to improve his technique to become a better wrestler for districts and state.

If a wrestler is to injured to compete. He should default.
A wrestler cannot use an injury to take away another wrestlers offense. If I have the legs in and working a power half, I might only know how to run it to one side, should I try to run it on the other side, I might get to high and get rolled. That's my best move so now I cannot use it. Why should I be penalized. His injury may cost me a match.
If a wrestler cannot engage in every aspect of the match because he is hurt. It is his coaches resp to remove him. So Nixa parents or whoever, it is your fault as a parent you should not have let your son compete. you should talk to your coach. However, I don't believe for a minute that Coach Carter would put a wrestler on the mat that could not compete. I also don't believe that Coach Gross would go out of his way to hurt another kid. Coach Gross is a class act.
To use a personal example. I seperated my shoulder in sectionals. I wrestled with the injury all thr / state. In my 3rd place match I was getting run over in an arm bar. I could not defend it, Coach threw the towel in as I was being run over.

If you are focused only on a injurned area Then you Qualify as a cheap shot with a sever lack of charcter .

And if a Coach tells his kid to abandon a half or hammerlock on a certain shoulder, and to specifically yell "The other shoulder is the hurt one, go after it" is unethical and bush league.
I believe the kid was healhy enough to finish the match if I understand it correctly. Its not the fact the kid was hurt and the opponent was wrestling his usual style... the problem lies in that Coach Gross was yelling for his wrestler to intentionally hurt the other kid.
Loethan, we all respect your toughness and grit. How kick ass is that Ozark youth team looking now?

T.D.C by the way congrats to White and Velli... for thier outstanding performance at Tulsa. They are studs.
I am not trying to be full of myself, I could care less..... I was trying to make a point. I know Kirk, I don't think he would try to hurt a kid. But anything on the mat is fair game. You tape both hands, so your opponent cannot focus in on the injury.

01-22-2006, 08:25 PM
This is rediculous. I believe if a wrestler is going to wrestle hurt, then there is a chance whatever part of your body that is hurt can be hurt further. If you got hurt wrestling, what are the possibiliteis if you wrestle, you will get hurt again. Also if a wrestler is hurt, I am sure Coach Carter asked him if he wanted to wrestle.
Second, if a wrestlers gets a bloody nose during the match and he shoots on you should you not crossface. And if you don't crossface and your coach tells you to, is he wrong for telling you to block a shot. I get the work the other shoulder comment, some wrestlers work better on certain sides of the body. If you normaly take a shot to the right side should you shoot to the left. I don't believe it was a comment to work the hurt sholder, but work the side your better at.
No one should have a advantage because they are hurt, you either choose to wrestle or not. Neither Coach is in the wrong, they are just doing there job and that is coaching.

Thanks for changing the discussion back to the tournament. Smith over Hairston 18-4. He will have enough weigh-ins to stay at 112 if he makes the rest of them. anything on the mat, legally done is fair game.
If the situation were reversed, Our wrestler with hurt shoulder, faces a Nixa kid and the match is at districts for a state berth, and the Nixa coach yells run a double bar arm would we be having this discussion?
If a wrestler is injured and cant go then maybe his coach or his parents shouldn't send his athlete to compete.
Get over it and please stop whinning.

I watched the match for the second time today.
In the third period of the match my wrestler was running a crossbody ride and he was going to the near shoulder after two scrambles and near reversals I yelled work to the other shoulder.
Again we rode out for the win. No PD, no stalemate, and no illegal move.
Just underhooked and stalled.
I went to Dsquared on Saturday and talked face to face. I believe that is the way adults handle things. They don't hide behind internet monikers and call people out. "What about Bob."
And why do I not find it surprising that this particular Ozark wrestler wants to talk me down?? I wonder?? Take the skirt off and reveal yourself before you attack a man's integrity.

MG thanks for the great photo's, much appreciated!! Coach Gross you should not have to explain yourself on this forum. I was there and heard nothing that would indicate that you had intentions of hurting a Nixa wrestler. I have had the good fortune of getting to know you as a person recently and I am very glad that you are a part of Branson Wrestling. I am even more glad that on top of hard work you demand that your wrestlers display class and character. Branson wrestling is headed in the right direction and the Branson fans appreciate all that you do coach. It is tragic that a few ungrateful people try to damage a persons character because they are spoiled. Coach you and coach Banks (lol) are doing a great job in Branson.
Congratulations to Ozark on another impressive COC Championship, another program headed in the right direction. Congrats to all teams at COC this weekend ever school was represented well. Finally thanks to all the great people at Willard the tournament was awesome.

Hey TDC,
Why do care about my eye color, is there something you want to tell us?
Kirk, you are class act. You have done a great job. I respect you and your program.
A comment was made earlier "Thats not how we wrestle in SWMO" well we better start, because everybody else wrestles physically, and if we don't we are never going to have a state championship team.

Well sader / combat wrestler I will tell it to you plain sense your so dense it went right over your head. That comment about your eye color being brown Is a way of saying your full of crap, all the way up to your eyeballs.
Buddy I cut you a ton a slack on this fourm because your in the service. Well you have used that all up and then some. Personal I think your the biggest blowhard whinners on here . All you had to do was leave nixa out of it and you could'nt do it could you.You thought you would make a few dumb azz remarks and everyone would let you slide. Your use to people getting tired of you hasseling them and them letting you have your way . Not this time Gommer Pile . You better find some one else to try and bully because it aint going to work out for you this time.
This is all about trying to teach our kids how to take the high road instead of the low one,be a better sportman and build their character, be more than just what the rules call for you to be, go the extra mile , put a good hand foward at trying to be a decent human being. Believe or not sader they learn this stuff from coaches as well as their parents and it is what Ive taught my son's and daughter. And that's the way coach Carter and I believe coach Jackson feel and I hope coach Gross feels. But I can see right now that it's a waste of words to some of you guy's with that win at any cost attuide, guy's like you sader.
So if you want to keep this going have at it, because i'm just getting started

Coach Gross and I spoke face to face about the incident that occured at the meet. As far as I am concerned the matter is settled. Coach Gross does a great job at Branson and I have nothing but respect for that program and all of the kids on that team. Both of the kids involved in the match are quality kids that were just trying to win a match. End of story. Lets try to focus on all the great wrestling that took place at this tournament and at how competitive it was. Congratulations to Ozark for lining up and beating all those who stood before them. Let's not forget that Ozark had a team that was also suffering from a number of injuries (and unfortunate events) but still came out on top. It was a great tournament all around.

Hey TDC
I assume your son is going to wrestle in college. Well get ready becuase your own team mates will go after injuries in the practice room trying to get a varsity spot.
You need to grow up, drop your fantasies about me and get off Gross's back.
I could care less about Nixa, you attacked a friend (Gross) in a cowardly way.
Grow up and wrestle, live in the real world, and really drop the fantasies about me you are starting to creep out my wife.

I know I'm getting in on this discussion WAY too late.......but TDCDad calling someone else a whiner (whinner?) is absolutely laughable. Hey pot, this is Mr Collins.......you're black!
think_again coined it perfectly. This is wrestling, it's not hopscotch. If a kid is wrestling w/ an injury, he HAS to expect his opponent to try to take advantage of it - as long as it's legal. It's part of the sport. If you don't like it, go join the band or the debate team. If you see a kid w/ a knee wrapped up w/ a big kneepad on it, do you shoot on that knee or the other one? That's an easy one.
If it were up the TDCDad, the wrestlers would present each other a rose before each match.
Jeeeeez.

I got the full story and now have a different opinion but I do understand both sides of the argument.
For the record, while I still believe that working an opponents injury for the purpose of causing INTENTIONAL bodily harm is wrong, I think a kid should be able to work any legal move in a match. After exchanging PM's with coach Gross, I am confident that what he was yelling at his kid was done as a coaching strategy and NOT done to intentionally harm the other wrestler.
I apologize to Coach Gross for calling his coaching unethical.

Wow TDC, I am loser, really, I have accomplished more in my 33 years than you will in your lifetime. Wow, you are good.
You didn't say the following things:
If you are focused only on a injurned area Then you Qualify as a cheap shot with a sever lack of charcter .
That kind of coaching may fly in the other parts of the state but we don't wrestle like that SwMo!
I think you did. So you are also a liar.
I live 5 miles away. Why don't you quit hiding behind TDC dad and talk to me in person. I don't think you would be so bold.
I called Coach Gross to get the real story before I posted one thing. I got the real deal from Gross and Hall. They are Honest, ethical people and what they said is good enogh for me. you could have done the same. The numbers are in the phone book, but no you would rather run down a mans rep on line where you are safe.
By the way, find one quote were I ran down Nixa-- try to find one, I did run down the parents of the wrestler, the resp falls to them if thier boy/girl can't compete pull him/ her off the mat.

Guys, check out my new topic of "COC Rap, Dance, and Brotherhood" & it'll help you move on. It's done, it's over. Let's enjoy some of the good things this tournament offered. My son's a senior this year. He has no plans to wrestle beyond high school so he's soaking up every minute of it. What occurred after the matches Saturday made anything else pale in comparison. They take it out on the mat, but in the end, they're in this brotherhood together. A brotherhood that routinely gets ignored in the media and dissed at schools (Nixa routinely schedules Homecomings and other events while big wrestling events are going on). These guys have the respect of each other. Watching the rap-off, dance-offs, and Ozark's Vernatti throwing a full court Skittle to the mouth of Nixa's Pickering showed what is special about this sport. Comraderie.
If we're gentlemen, let's move on and celebrate the great things this sport has given to our kids.
