Northwest Missouri State was in action this past weekend at the University of Dubuque-Spartan Open. The team sent five guys, but had no placers. It was a solid tournament overall with most of Iowa's starters and backups, Wisconsin, Purdue, Loras, Upper Iowa, Wartburg, Augustana, etc., all present.

Northwest will next be in action on Saturday at the Turkey Open at Coe College. Wrestling is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Most likely the team will send between 5-10 wrestlers to compete. Teams slated to compete include Coe College, Cornell College, Harper College, Upper Iowa, Waldorf College, Waubonsee College, Lawrence College, North West MO. St.

Northwest Missouri's program is a club sport. They dropped wrestling in the mid-80s.

Dogman,
I am sure funds are limited and it is to bad that you have limited choices to compete at the college level. Wrestling has lost 295 programs since 1972.

Dogman:
We currently do not give scholarships. We are working on raising funds, so that sometime in the future that might be a possibility.

While we are a club sport, we are still provide an opportunity to compete at the college level. We have a full schedule of duals and tournaments. Realistically we aren't on the level of a full-fledged program, but if someone is looking to test the waters of college wrestling or to continue to compete without as much of a time commitment as a regular program, Northwest might be a good option.

I have talked to Jim Giunta, the head of the NCWA, about the opportunities presented by club teams that actively compete such as ours. There have been numerous instances where guys on NCWA teams have gotten noticed by coaches and offerred scholarships. In addition some people are now opting to wrestle on an NCWA team as opposed to junior college team, then transfer.

One final point is that since we are a club team, team members have a great role in determining the outcome and livlihood of the team. It is a great chance for people to assume leadership roles in order to create and maintain a program.

Hopefully people now consider Northwest an option, particularly those unsure of whether they want to wrestle in college or not. Wrestling aside Northwest is a good school with relatively low tution.

Question: Will participation in a NCWA club team count the same as participation in a collegiate program? In other words, if a wrestler wrestles 2 years for Northwest Missouri State's club team and then transfers to Mizzou, will that wrestler have 4 years of eligibility remaining or just 2?

From my understanding since we aren't a school sponsored sport, the determining factor for eligility left would be years or semesters in school depending on the division. I believe if someone competed 2 years on our NCWA team they would have 3 years of eligibility left if they transferred to Mizzou.

NCMC4life Is right. You have 5 years of eligiblity from the time you first enroll in college, regardless of whether you wrestle or not. Obviously 1 year is a redshirt year. There are also exceptions granted on an individual basis for various reasons, military service, injuries, etc.

i read somewhere that some pretty good NAIA and NCAA kids are looking at Northwest Missouri as a transfer option. Does anyone know who these wrestlers might be?
