Has the list of teams participating in the PC invitational on Jan 20-21 been finalized yet? I hope Omaha Skutt is back to defend their title. It is always a great tournament. Maybe this year PC can knock them off.

Is Skutt ranked in the nation ? Who/what weights are the ones to look out for

Skutt is not ranked nationally, however, they are always in the running for the Nebraska Class B (equivalent to Missouri Class 3) title. Think of them as being similar to Park Hill, Ray-Pec, Hannibal, or Farmington.
Matt Burnz

Yes, similar to those schools... but with 8 straight state titles.
RP-in-Nebraska
01-18-2006, 08:51 AM
Yes, this is true. I tried to give a current analogy - maybe a better analogy would be to equate them with Helias of the 1980's. Private Cotholic school, multiple state championships, mid-size, etc.
For the record, I believe Park Hill would send them back to Omaha with a loss.
Also, Nebraska has a different way of classifying schools than Missouri. Instead of taking the total number of schools and dividing by 4 to have 4 classes with the same number of schools, they assign the 32 largest schools to class 4 (half of the wrestlers are state qualifiers), the next 48 to class B, the next 64 to class C, and the rest (75) to class D. This yields a very lopsided class A with the largest school having 1996 students and the smallest having only 724. Skutt is 6th largest in class B with 512 students. The smallest in class B has only 198 students. This leaves 2 full classes of schools with fewer than 200 students each!

Just for fun, here’s a hypothetical match-up between Oak Park and Skutt based on head-to-head competition. Skutt is currently ranked #1 in Nebraska (I think for all 4 classes)
103 M. Bailey WBF Z. Cottle
112 Katusin dec Uehlin
119 Green WBF Sackett
125 J. Nay dec Kottas
130 O’Donnell Mdec Q. Cottle (based on national ranking for Scott and the fact that Cottle was only a SQ last year)
135 Joiner WBF Carritore
140 Z. Bailey T-Fall Vogel
145 S. Nay WBF Raetz
152 Nordstrom dec Hall (Nordstrum is 2005 state champ)
160 Svendsen dec Koelling (toss-up, I gave one toss-up to Skutt and one to OP)
171 Haynes T-Fall Anderson
189 Schaeffer Mdec Kono
215 Bradshaw dec Muschall (toss-up - I gave this one to Bradshaw based on the fact that Muschall was not a SQ last year)
HWT Madison dec. Lathum (given to Madison based on National ranking and Lathum went 1-2 at NE state last year losing by fall twice)
Final Score Oak Park 47, Skutt 13

i am anxious to see how the 112 # class shakes out, should be some great competition. burns, hunter, schmitz, and who ever from out of state.
schmitz is my pick to win unless someone from out of state surprises the field

I don't know how good Schmitz is but Katusin from Skutt lost 9-2 vs. Untrauer from Midwest City, OK who pinned Marty Uehlin of Oak Park in the 1st period - to give you some perspective.

hope i haven't spoken out of turn and i certainly wouldnt want to put a target on colton schmitz back. I think that his only loss was to linderman of creston iowa last weekend in the finals at centerville tourny. really good freshman , that is all i am saying.

I wasn't too far off by making a prediction on the outcome of the tournament, but here I go:
Skutt wins the tournament by more than 80+ points.
9 finalists with 8 champs
4 conso finalists with 4 3rd places
1 DNP
Sorry, Skutt is a power house and I would love to see them go down, but I don't think a MO school can do it.
RP-in-Nebraska
01-20-2006, 02:10 PM
There are 3 MO schools that would destroy Skutt but they won't be at this tournament - Oak Park, Fort Zumwalt West, and Park Hill. Why don't you list by weight each of those 8 champs so we can analyze your statement.
For the record, I agree that Skutt will win this tournament. However, if they were in the Winnetonka tournament this weekend, they'd struggle to place in the top 5.

Maybe PC will surprise and make it closer than you think. Skutt is
good no denying that. But if I can use your earlier logic, you said
if Skutt was in the Winnetonka Tourn they would have a tough time
cracking the top 5. Well PC finished 5th in the Lee's Summit Tourn.
with OP and company in attendance. Only a few points behind Francis
Howell and Park Hill.
Who knows? You seem to right on with your other picks. Maybe -
Maybe not.
We will see Saturday Night.

Hello Everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone could post up the results. Or better yet, Take digital pictures of the brackets and send them to me in Kuwait at larry.cottle@us.army.mil
I want to see the brackets seeing how my sons are wrestling there this weekend. I will in return post those brackets up this site as a hyperlink for each weight class.
I'm looking for some help here. Thanks :-)

Well we just got home from the tourney and yes Skutt won with Platte County second and Kirksville in third....there was some very good matches in the medal round best match for me was 145,my grandson Dakota Fowler beat the boy from Skutt by decision for first place. Tyler St. Louis also took first with a win over the boy from Odessa and Jake Mallonee took first with a win over Skutt. I don't have the brackett book with me so don't remember the other matches but we did see some good wrestlers today.. was a great tournament.

Mallonee WBF in all of his matches, all but one in first period.
Great tournament. Skutt was as good as usual, and Kirksville showed really well.

what happened to burns and schmitz at 112?
Louie
01-22-2006, 09:44 AM
Schmitz won his pool pinning burns, but got pinned by the hunter in the semis. Burns got beat by the skutte kid in the semis and then lost to schmitz for third. If 112 wasn't the toughest weight class it had to be close. The top four will be state medalist. Great wrestling.
just a wrestling fan
01-22-2006, 12:25 PM
The thing about 112 was the Skutt wrestler was by far superior to the others. If you wrestled it 3 times the Skutt kid would win three times.
The real battle was at 130. St. Louis, Bainbridge and Skutt. All had outstanding battles with each other. If you wrestled this 3 times you could very well have three different winners.

Just looking at the numbers for the results of PC Inv., IT APPEARS that Platte Co. is stronger team wise than they were last year (as i thought they might be) +53.5, but the biggest improvement goes to Kirksville +61.5 points.
pcparent
01-22-2006, 07:11 PM
You are right-Kirksville was much improved over last year, and wrestled better than Odessa, and least this past weekend. PC would have scored better if Henson had been available-perhaps another 15+ points.
I was bothered by the number of open weights these traditional strong wrestling programs had-I don't know if it was a lot of injuries or what, but except for Skutt and PC, it seemed each team had at least five open weight classes.

4th Nathan Anderson ??? McDonald County
5th Kendall Burns ??? Platte County

Hunter pinned Schmitz at PC tourn. but finished behind him at Belton (don’t think they met there?)
Schmitz pinned and teched Burns.
Burns decisioned Fowler.
Burkhart defeated Anderson at Seneca
Any more results anyone can throw into the mix?
without any more info, my guess would be:
1 Hunter
2 Schmitz
3 Burkhart
4 Burns
5 Fowler
6 Anderson
- Addison
- Lamar
- Patton
If I went with my gut instead of the results, I would switch Burkhart and Anderson, but Burkhart’s win knocks Anderson down a few notches.
