I always thouht the west plains Zizzers was creative.

ZIZZER (ZIZ'ZER) n. 1. an expert in any activity - adj. (colloq) FIRST RATE; 2. a person of the highest caliber, ability or reputation. 3. one who is victorious; (syn)

I was Over at my mothers house this weekend and found a news paper cliping of the Zizzer wrestling line up with my brother in it . He thought it was around 1975 or 76 which is proably about right sense they cut the program 1977-78. Working on 30 years with no wrestling for the Zizzers

Kickapoo- built on the Kickapoo prarie it was named after the Native American Tribe, but thumbs down to the Brown and Gold colors.

Parkview- built in the middle of a park with a great view - get it.

Hillcrest- built on the crest of a large hill.

At Fort Zumwalt we are named after a guy named Jacob Zumwalt who at one time had a outpost while Missouri was frontier country, they are in the process of rebuilding the "Fort".

Some others ...

Californa - Pintos

Camdenton - Lakers

Poplar Bluff - Mules

Some from the college level ...

I think it is the Western Illinios Leathernecks is always a good one.

The Best are the St. Louis CC's Mascots
Meramec Magic
Forest Park Higlanders
Florissant Valley Norsemen

12-22-2005, 05:11 AM
I think the mascots for Conway, Arkansas are the "Wampus Cats."

12-22-2005, 07:41 AM
The Hooker Horny Toads in Oklahoma.

In the pan handle of OK.

12-22-2005, 08:51 AM
Actually, Meramec "Magic" is a new name, for most of their history Meramec's nickname was the "Warriors", but they gave into the PC pressure of today's society. Saying that I like the "Magic" better than the "Warriors".

Some others who have changed.

Marqette "Warriors" to "Golden Eagles"

SEMO "Indians" to "Red-Hawks"

St. John's "Redmen" to "Red-Hawks"

Stanford "Indians" to "Cardinal", one of the first school's to change.

Those are just a few that pop into my head. What are some others?

Have any high schools changed mascots?

12-22-2005, 09:22 AM
I know that American Indians feel insulted by having Indians as mascots. I've never considered an Indian mascot as demeaning. I've always interpreted it the other way. I remember as a kid wanting to act like an Indian because I thought they were cool. The FSU and Atlanta Braves fans have always seemed intimidating when they do their "chant".

Clarification, the one apparently demeaning mascot would be the Redskins (how would you like to have the Washington D.C. Whiteboys) but names like Indians, Braves, Warriors, Chiefs, etc. are good names IMO.

12-22-2005, 09:24 AM

What about those of us who are of Irish decent?

We don't always like to "fight".

12-22-2005, 09:34 AM
Good point. Notre Dame shall henceforth have the mascot.....

The Fighting Lillies.

12-22-2005, 09:38 AM
Quick to the point to the point no faking - cooking MC's like a pound of bacon!

I think PC has gone amuck. I guess the name of the state of Indiana should be changed along with Indianapolis!

12-26-2005, 08:37 PM
Arkansas Tech "Wonder Boys"

12-27-2005, 06:51 AM
Delaware Fighting Blue Hens
not as original but amusing

01-01-2006, 05:43 PM
ok, I know this also isn't a MO school and of course I came from a very very very very small school out of KY. But we had an appropriate mascot. The Fulton County Pilots. That was because we had a working harbour in our town. (ok get it)

01-11-2006, 02:10 PM
I think a zizzer is a lightening bolt???

01-11-2006, 10:27 PM
One nickname that I am suprised has remained under the radar is the Savanah Savages. No way can that be construed as anything but a negative term.

01-12-2006, 05:33 AM
Not domesticated or cultivated; wild: savage beasts of the jungle.
Not civilized; barbaric: a savage people.
Ferocious; fierce: in a savage temper.
Vicious or merciless; brutal: a savage attack on a political rival.
Lacking polish or manners; rude.

01-12-2006, 06:53 AM

01-12-2006, 02:15 PM
I forgot to mention that the Savanah team mascot is clearly a native american.
