Note that Intermat is featuring the Missouri - Stanford dual. There is a nice preview of the ten matches (I assume by Jason Bryant) together with rather reasonable predictions.

It is nice that Mizzou is beginning the season in KC. As a St. Louis resident I've had it pretty cushy the last three years having the Tigers open their season close by.

Way to go Tigers and to Michael Chandler! He was predicted to lose by a major decision, and pulls it off in OT. That's the Mike I know, never quits.

Pell looked sloppy.........not very focused. It might take him a few matches to get used to the weight change.......he'll be fine.

Seems like you are making excuses.
You're making it sound like a hardship to wrestle guys 20 pounds lighter than what he's wrestled for the past two years. Unless he's cutting lots of weight (which doesn't seem to be the case-- but I don't know this for certain), common logic suggests that this should be easier to deal with these smaller opponenets.
My own observations of watching Matt is that he is a somewhat hot-and-cold wrestler. Sometimes he looks like a world beater, other times he looks merely "above average." When he is "on" he is a very explosive wrestler. To his credit, he has performed very well at his two NCAA appearances.

I'm not making excuses, just telling what I saw. He looked sloppy. Blake's first period td and reversal were off of Pell being a slightly out of position. I give a lot of credit to Blake, however...he's a tough wrestler and never gave up (btw, he was a 112 lbr. his senior year in hs). I agree w/ you that Pell is a hot & cold wrestler, and the other night he was a little cold. I chalk that up to being the first match of the year.

..........Hendricks, Letters, Moose, Churella, Nagel, Paulson, etc.....don't think any of these guys will be easy to deal with. They may be smaller, but they are much faster. Pell's 2 losses @ nationals were to, probably, the quickest 184 lbr's in the nation (E Bradley & G Jones). Jan 15 in Columbia....Pell v. Hendricks!

how did the others look
Kephart - looked good early, w/ a 1st period near-side cradle. Couldn't muster up anything after that, Gardner is a leech on top...scored 14 straight points.
T Mac - looked great. Got an early td and rode the hell out of the guy. Had about 4-5 minutes of riding time then decided to practice some takedowns.
C Mac - looked very good....totally dominated.
Lewis - .......ummm.......well...........Zupancic is tough. I would have like to seen Cole in there, especially since it was @ his high school, and he wrestled Zupancic very tough last year. Oh well.
Chandler - looked good, especially @ the end....great win vs. a 20+ victory wrestler from Stanford.
Askren - totally dominated talented freshman, Feist.
Pell - see above
Jordan - yikes. Totally dominated the senior. For anyone who hasn't seen him yet........he's freakin' huge. Oh yeah, he's pretty damn good too. He's going to surprise some people this year.
Foust - looked pretty solid against Bork. Looked a bit winded after the middle of the 2nd period - had to cut quite a bit of weight leading up to match.
Connole - Very tall, definitely has some skills. Beat another undersized hwt. pretty easily. Hopefully he can gain 20-30 lbs. in the next couple of years. If so, he'll be very tough

How does calling someone sloppy constitue an excuse?
Common logic would also suggest that:
A) He is cutting weight, something he hasn't done for two years.
B) He is also wrestling at a significantly quicker pace.

OK, ok, I give. Good point on the quickness of lighter guys & Matt's having a challenge at making weight for first time in a few years. Still, it shouldn't be portrayed as a hardship to wrestle these lighter guys (if making weight is reasonable).
Let's see how Matt does on Sunday at the Missouri Open. I don't think that 165 is the toughest weight, with the most notable Div I opponents being Dean (IN), King (OU), Penn (ED). Max Dean of Indiana is tough, but shouldn't be in Matt's league yet. The one to watch out for is Deonte Penn of Edinboro (if Edinboro is indeed showing up). Penn is an explosive wrestler-- I watched him destroy Don Reynolds last year at Midlands. There might be some good non-Div I wrestlers at this weight, but I'm not sure. I'm also assuming that if Illinois' Michael Poeta is cleared to wrestle (he had a knee-to-the-head a couple weeks ago), that he'll wrestle 157.
Mr. Conn, looks like your son got off to a good start last weekend. Nice job! Is he wrestling in the "Under 20" group on Sunday?

Thanks, and I don't know what group he will wrestle with. I just hope he stays healthy for awhile now, it's been a tough year for injuries among the Freshman.
Mike Poeta is tough it will be interesting to see how he does against James Williamsons "shutdown" style of wrestling. Tirapele (sp??) had a tough time with it @ CMSU.
I was told that Matt was over weight for CMSU and that's why he didn't wrestle.

Someone in the crowd on Sunday told me 12 lbs over, or something like that. Looks like he took out his frustration of the Blake match on a 1/2 dozen Shakespeare's Pizzas. :D

Nope, I think that James style works real well. He scores when he needs to and shuts his opponents down with great defense. When you take the #2 guy in the country into overtime I think that says it all.
