andrew wood was pinned in the second period last night by weston keleher of moberly...... the score was 4 to 4 at the start of the second when keleher slap a cradle on wood turned him and stuck him......this was no fluke!

Sounds like Wood had a rough night. He almost lost to McKinney 7-6.

Andrew Wood is a great wrestler, but it is not like he is losing to any chumps there. I am presuming that weston is josiah's little bro and i saw him wrestler. he does know what he is doing and is ready for high school. While Mckinney placed in state last year and is great on his feet like andrew so it probably was a stale mate all match
Good wrestling room wallpaper if you ask me.

I have a comment about the match last night with Wood and Kelleher, Looked like to me that Wood was not on top of his game and made a mistake and kelleher just got lucky. I would really like to see kelleher wrestle the kid from Marshall my guess would be that Mckinney would tear him up. Wood and Mckinney were very much evenly matched. They wrestle a lot a like and are both excellent athletes. Always remember anyone can be beat on any given day and everyone has an off day. I can bet if Wood would wrestle Kelleher again things would be a lot different.

Luck had nothing to do with the win. The match was tied 4-4 at the start of the second. Wood had two takedowns, Kelleher had 1. You don't get lucky with a cradle. Kelleher was focused and tenacious.
Moberly and Marshal will see each other at the dual, district and state so we will see how Kelleher does against Mckinny.

Pretty sure you can get lucky with a craddle, seen it a few times. I can't wait to see McKinney and Keleher go at it. I think McKinney is gonna pull it out though, anyways thats to discuss in class 2.

I have to disagree about "getting lucky with the cradle" idea. The cradle is a wrestling technique which must be learned and executed at the moment there is an opening. The wrestler feels the opportunity and takes it. Holding the cradle also requires good strengh. Otherwise, a stronger legged wrestler can kick out. No - working the cradle is not luck - its wrestling skill!!! And to work one on an outstanding state champion wrestler says even more about the wrestler who is able to pull it off. I have known state champs who used the cradle as their primary weapon. These guys were able to pin opponents in less than 2 minutes of the first period. Watch the Funk Master of MU - Askren. He does not cradle by luck but with much strength, skill and ability. That's why he's the Funk Master!!!! Because Missouri kids wrestling is on a progressive road - our freshmen are entering high school with more WRESTLING SKILLS than every before!! No - it's not luck - it's skill combat!!!! :smt027

Wood was hurt during the match against De Smet. If he hadn't been, I'm sure it's quite possible the pin wouldn't have happened. Wood seemed to be back on top of his game in his first match on Saturday, so it's hard to tell what may have happened in the dual with De Smet.

Really? Does winning on any day in February count?

Granted - perhaps in the minds of most wrestlers, very few high school wins could compare to a state championship win. But I have seen and taken part in some great wins that occured prior to the big dance that remain on the record and count as such. Obviously, if one wins a state championship match - such a win could change one's life course. Thus, a win in the final match of the season at state may count more or lead to more than wins (or loses) in other matches (perhaps you are implying something along this line). On the other hand, most wrestlers never make it to state. Does any of their wins count? Is the purpose of wresting only to win a state championship? Most wrestlers don't train year round or do the other necessary extras such as attend training camps and summer tournments each year outside of the regular school year to reach the top step in Columbia. Look at the numerous wrestlers left home following the district tournament. Would they agree that the wins they amassed during the season did not count? In other words, I believe that every win counts - but some are seemingly more important than others 8)

Regular season wins are nice and have a feel good effect on any wrestler, but if you believe what you wrote here, then you are very out of touch with the wrestling mentality. The ONLY reason a wrestler pushes himself (herself) to their limit and beyond, is the persuit of a state championship. Other accolades collected along the way are a part of the process, not the end means!!!!!

However nice it would be to believe this, it is just not true. I'll bet if you took a poll of wrestlers and asked them their realistic goals for the wrestling season, probably a third would say to simply qualify for state, another third would say to medal at state, and the top third would probably say to win a state championship. Some may even have less lofty goals than qualifying. Some wreslters are selfless and know that even though they have no shot at an individual championship, any win at state gives team points so they create realistic goals of qualifying for state and perhaps medaling at state. Some wreslters have personal goals of simply cracking the varsity line-up. People can be driven for different reasons and it's not always for ultimate personal satisfaction, gratification, and exaltation.

Ref_35 - The fact remains - most wrestlers do not train year round or do what is necessary to win a state championship. Further, your main focus seems to be on the wrestler pushing himself to the limit and beyond. I concur that one who does that and thus trains year round may well be in persuit of a state championship. So all you have done is simply expanded on my point of view. Looks like you were so busy seeking to disagree with me that you missed the connection. On the other hand, maybe both of us are out of touch with the wrestling mentality - whatever that is. Thanks for the reply and Happy New Year!!!

Fine points RP. I am in complete agreement with you. I can also see what Ref 35 is attempting say as well. That is why I was careful to add to his statement regarding the wrestler who pushes himself to the limit also working year round possibly in persuit of a championship. I am sure that would be true of most state champs. Great reply!! I am happy to know that after having been involved in wrestling for over 30 years that I did not enter this new year being out of touch with "the wrestling mentality." The Ref made a bad call on that one!! Happy New Year!!
