I watched a few minutes of Greta last night and got PIZZED!. She interviewed some lady from St. Louis (I think she was some type of reporter or political analyst) and the first question Greta asked her was how the name "Missouri" was pronounced. That St. Louis elitist snobby wench said "If you are from the West side of the state you pronounce it Missour-uh and if you are from the East side of the state you pronounce it Missour-ee". It seemed so snobbish as if she was taking a jab at the K.C. side as if we are dumb hicks. I know exactly one person who pronounces the name of our state as Missour-uh and every one else I know pronounces it Missour-ee. I might agree that there are more people on this side who pronounce it incorrectly as Missour-uh but the overwhelming majority pronounce it correctly as Missour-ee.

I say Missouree and live an hour south of St. Louis and most snobby St. Louis soccer mom types would definitely lable me as a "hick". Most people from St. Louis (northeners as we call 'em) like to poke fun at my so called "accent". I don't think its as bad as they make it out to be.

I've lived on the west side of the state for a good chunk of my life, and I have a hard time remembering hearing it pronounced "Missour-ah" over here. Most of the people who I've heard say it that way (on t.v.) are not from here - mostly the pundits/elitist east-coasters on the political talk shows.
St. Louisians are snobby...............see Northco, for example...............

That was sort of what I was getting at too, Fudge. I don't think many missourians actually say Missourah, I think its a few politicians and other media types who want to "sound" more "down home".

I have noticed too, that people outside Missoureeee say St. Louie instead of St. Louis. Nobody that lives here says that either.

Being a Kentuckian (and we have the same problem with Louisville) I pronounce my new home town stats as Missoureee. and I say St. Louis. Maybe I say it that way because everyone I know says it that way. And believe me, I get told ALL the time I have an accent. (KY accent that is)
