I'm as big of a class 1 fan as there is......but this 4 class system is beginning to become a disaster for Class 1. Losing Boonville, Richmond, & Berkeley, among others, has all but completely obliterated the competitive balance in an already competitive-challenged class. To call some of these district line-ups "jokes" would be an insult to any and all knock-knock joke ever told. Not only could a large # of teams in D2 & D3 not field full squads, but most of them could not even field half a squad. Again, please explain to me how this is good for wrestling in MO?
I realize that most of the fans of the 4 class system are class 1 folks (and Bob Luke). Could one of you out there please explicate to the rest of us how this cerebral abortion of an idea is.........beneficial........to sport as a whole?
This is nothing short of a complete debacle by the myopic, insular, inward-looking coaches and a.d.'s who voted for this utter fiasco.......

Please translate for the intellectually-challenged and wrestling coaches who read this stuff...

I would just like some sane, rational, non liberal-utopian limp-wristed "everybody should medal so they feel good about themselves" bullsh!t type of response to how this is a GOOD thing.......

In the begining I was in favor of 4 classes. I thought it would encourage more small schools to start wrestling programs, and keep some schools from dropping wrestling.
I would like to believe that 5-10 years from now that the depth of class one will grow to where the wrestling improves. I think it will to some degree. 5-10 years from now eah class will have more teams. Many of the new teams will be large schools that will move some of the small Class 2 teams back down.
If it does not, I vote for one class. With a District, Sectional, and Regional tournaments with a 32 person Bracket at state. Then the lesser school would have to celebrate State qualifiers like they were state medalists. it would take some time for that culture to develope.
Lets give 4 classes more than 2 years before we ax it. Lets see where we are in 4 years, then if it is not getting better, I will follow Fudge as he storms the offices of MSHSAA in a military coup.

Fudge, First of all, you are a pretty big guy....but, your weight should have nothing to do with being a Class one fan.....look at Grant Leighty.
Secondly, I don't think the 4 class system is a bad idea and if structured correctly can encourage smaller schools to start new programs that will make Missouri High School Wrestling better overall. The problem is the short sighted attempt to have equal numbers of schools in each of the 4 classes.
The number of schools in each class should not only be determined by equally dividing the total number of schools by 4. Consideration of the student population should be considered. Class 1 will have to have more schools than the math points out to keep the level of competition up.
The break between Class 1 and 2 should be at a larger point to make this class competitive. Later down the road, a simple division based on the total being divisible by 4 may work.
Until, we take the mentality of "I'll vote for it as long as my school's program is not affected!" decision making, it will not be fixed.

Is anyone encouraging these smaller schools to give wrestling a try? I figure the Clarence Cannon Conf or the WEMO conf would be a good starts. Most of the WEMO schools are bigger than the likes of Stanberry. So they could compete well, Or the southwest conferences try and get schools like Aurora, Cassville, and East Newton to get their programs restarted. Also the many of the Southeast schools that had prior programs. I would start with those schools. What are some opinions? or Suggestions?

I always wondered why schools in the Clarence Cannon Conference never had wrestling. Monroe City, Palmyra, South Shelby, and Macon all traditionally have had very strong football programs w/ decent participation #'s. Good point.

They just have to have someone come in and champion the cause. A new teacher with wrestling experience! I would imagine that in smaller schools the teacher turn over rate is slower.....therefore, it would take longer for a new teacher with wrestling experience to move in.

I know the superintendent at Macon and she is totally against the idea of wrestling. She feels that they have to many extracurricular activities as it is. Her nephew is the principal at South Shelby and he was a basketball player in high school. He coached basketball and lives and breathes it. So getting into those two schools seems to be pretty tough.
Debbie Livingston is the superintendent at Macon, and Brett Thompson is the principal at South Shelby.

I will share a couple of thoughts on the subject...and these are only my own from many years of observation and service. First, in order to get smaller schools involved you have to have two things; parents in the community that are willing to march on the BOE to get it started and someone on staff that can coach it. I see two problems in that area alone. Many of the schools mentioned, particularly in the northeastern rural parts, are traditionally bastions of the roundball. Oh they like their football but basketball is king. They see wrestling only as a means to thin out their basketball numbers. They don't get that the 100 pounder sitting next to the 5'9, 240 pound all conference noseguard at the end of the bench would be perfect for wrestling. What's more, they don't really care because they have 20 kids sitting on the varsity bench. Coaching is a big issue. We are not doing a very good job of directing kids that would be good coaches into the teaching field. The few out there will go to school with programs. Cost is the final factor. Schools thinks it takes a million bucks when all you need is some stock singlets, a used mat, and a coach. $10-15K can get it done, which is about a year's worth of football equipment. The other thing, on that issue, is that once it's started it's pretty low cost to maintain.
This ranting about watered down has it's merits, but let's give it time. The same folks griping about the lessened quality in D2-3 are not seeing that there are new schools there that, with a little encouragement, will start to fill out rosters with experienced kids.
Football coaches at small schools need to start pushing. We all know the benefits of a wrestling program to football. Those kids that don't play basketball could now stay in shape in wrestling. I'm preaching to the choir here.
