View Full Version : MO State to drop 5 sports!

In their first year as "Missouri State" the school has decided to cut five varsity sports in a money saving move.

I'm shocked that a school that fought so hard to change its name to achieve "national" status, starts out it first year under the new name by dropping 5 varsity sports!

It amazes me that Lindenwood a private school that does not get a dime in state funding sponsers 38 varsity sports, while our state's second largest university plans on dropping 5 sports. Does this make sense to anyone?

The sports which are being dropped are: Tennis (both men and women), Mens Track (indoor and outdoor) and Mens Cross Country.

Is this all a money saving issue, or is there a Title IX compliance aspect too?

Lindenwood apparently has a different set of priorities. I'm not sure that this makes Lindenwood a better school. Maybe a comparison of chemsitry lab facilities, travel for faculty members, faculty salary, student opportunities in drama, debate, internships, etc. might also be a better way to compare the two schools. That a small school has 38 varsity sports (if that is in fact true) hits me as peculiar.

In a different vein, I have no idea what the budgetary status of Missouri State is, but keep in mind that the Governor of Missouri & his friends in the state legislature recently cut funds for children's health insurance. So Missouri certainly isn't flush with money.

They claim its budget related.

I guess they say it is not a done deal yet. The board of Governers has to decide next week (I think).

I was hopeing (I guess in vain) that MS would bring back wrestling. Their is so much talent in the SW corner of the state they could be competitive if they could recruit local.

Well my sons to best sports are wrestling and track. I hope a college sonewhere will offer them by the time he gets to college.

MG,

When I was a member of the MO State wrestling team (90 - 94) we had only a few wrestlers from OK on the team, the vast majority of the team was composed of Missouri wrestlers, our coach was from Iowa so as expected we recruited out of Iowa, but to be honest most of the Iowa guys never panned out.

High School wrestling in SW MO has grown by leaps on bounds since that time, I'm sure a number of SW Missouri wrestlers would have found a home at MSU, too bad we'll never know.

If memory serves me right, here was the starting line-up from our last year 93-94 and their home state.

118 Naret Viravong from Oklahoma, he was only a frosh, he finished his career wrestling in D-2 where he was a two-time AA.

126 Tony Dong from Kansas, a national qualifier in 93' he finished second in the Midlands tournament.

134 David Ross from Kirkwood, MO a two-time national qualifier

142 Jon Krause from Farmington, MO a two-time national qualifier

150 that was my weight, from St. Charles, MO

158 Jim Prendergast, from St. Louis, MO, AA in 93' his brother now wrestles at Navy.

167 Matt Orton, from Iowa, national qualifer, coaches at St. Charles West for a number of years.

177 Zane Heflin, for Oklahoma

190 Kalin Sharkey, just like shoeless joe from Hannible, MO Kalin was only a frosh. would have been a stud if they had kept the program

HW Mike Rodgers from Oakville, MO Mike was a D2 AA at SIUE, now he is an ultimate fighter.

Here's an idea. How about you call your state legislators and tell then in mass that you would be willing to pay more in state taxes to keep wrestling at colleges or create wrestling at more colleges in your state. Nobody likes paying taxes, but none of use like watching college wrestling programs disappear either. Lets put our money where our mouths are.

As a student at Mizzou, I absolutely am against the new MSU name. ESPN actually made the mistake of calling them Mizzou state, which had many Mizzou students and Alum pretty upset. In all honesty, maybe the reason they are dropping four sports is because they have to pay for all the "name changes." Changing all of your letter heads, clothing, signs, everything on campus, etc. probably got a little expensive.

I don't think anybody was more upset than Missouri State supporters. They don't want anything to do with Mizzou, their name or athletic programs-particularly their basketball team who is afraid to schedule the best college team in the state in MSU. As far as the name change is concerned, it is a moot point.

[quote] "I don't think anybody was more upset than Missouri State supporters."

Why would you think Mizzou supporters wouldnt be just as upset. Not only did the name change to Missouri State University become very similar to the University of Missouri, but then they were being called by OUR namesake nationally.
The name change is done and over with, but don't think there is not somewhat of a grudge between the 2 schools, especially when 2 groups form on our college "facebook." One by MSU, "Hey mizzou...meet MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY!!!" and another by Mizzou, "It Was Our Name First (Missouri State University), Find Your Own Name SMSU!" Those were the nicer groups formed that I found, haha!
:D
BTW Mizzou beat The Ohio State today!! There were some very good matches!! Ben Askren pinned his guy at around 30 seconds with a cradle, gotta love it!!!

I was interviewed over the weekend by the Springfield News-Leader about what it was like when MSU (SMS) dropped the wrestling program in 1994. The article is in today's sports section (12/12/05).

To be honest I'm more of a MIZZOU fan than I'll ever be an MSU fan, I guess it's because they have a wrestling team.

As far a the name change goes...I would have to say that a state the size of Missouri needs two major university's, if the name change helps so be it, but by dropping sports programs it seems MSU is headed in the wrong direction.

It is Lindenwood's intention to offer as many programs as possible to attract a large study-body, if anyone has been to the school in recent years you will see that they continue to re-invest in the school. LU facilities are far superior to most schools it's size, they are building new buildings left and right, and although its tution is much higher than state schools it has held steady for several years. Plus if you are a farmer you can barter your stock for tution costs! I like LU.

Im going to agree with someone else when they said cut the football team since they are not any good. I attend MSU and I was pumped to hear the name change thinking we would expand our recruiting base and become a team like Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Ohoio State and others with great athletic programs, but instead we are going in the opposite direction. I read this on a different webpage on November 11 2005.

Missouri State University is considering cutting its track and cross
country programs in the next couple of days. I would recommend that all
area runners email the chairman of the committee reviewing MSU athletic
programs, Dr. Bruce Johnson (rbj210f@MissouriState.edu), ASAP,
expressing their desire to keep the program going. I would also
recommend copying MSU President Dr. Michael Nietzel
(mtn797f@MissouriState.edu) on your email.

Mr. Hickey,
I just read the article from the Springfield paper, and you were much more gracious than I would have been. I wrestled at SMS, or MSU, from 73-77, and I was furious when they dropped the wrestling program, and still am unhappy about it. I am contacted yearly to give $ to the school, and I always tell them the same thing. "Call me back when you reinstate the wrestling team" I guess in light of the latest cuts, that's not ever going to happen. Very disappointing. I can't imagine how devastating it must have been to have the program dropped while you were wrestling there. FZN is now my second favorite high school wrestling program in the state. Best of luck to you and your team.

The programs are dropped because of budget concerns is what the AD Bill Rowe will say. The real hit the athletic department hit was having to find 200,000 for the lease at Hammons Field so baseball could play in the 32 million dollar stadium. Rowe is a former basball coach and baseball is his baby. I was told be another administrator that they had to drop 5 sports when I was at the 2005 wrestling Nationals. This was before the new president was even in place.

Dropping any sports program is bad enough but to get on a wrestling web sight and talk about dropping football is awful. The football does have a million dollar budget for 93 male athletes but men and womens basketball budgets at MSU are over 1.2 million for less than 30 athletes. It is possible to see a 1-AA football championship at MSU but I doubt if you will every see men's basketball taking on Duke in the NCAA men's basketball final. Come on why drop any sport at all!

Gunner,

You should be about 9 - 10 years old by now. I can't believe they quoted Brandon Rouse, my brother called me last night and was irate about it, the reporter had called Shawn but he told the reported he was in a meeting and that he should call John Krause, the guy was probably confused, and looked up Rouse instead. Anyways it was nice to see the old team picture.

KHill,

I guess you wrestled for Coach Mac. It was Coach Mac who actually gave me my scholarship at SMS, he was also my academic advisor at the school. By the way, if your up at state come see me and I'll give you an FZN wrestling T-Shirt, also if FZN is #2 who is #1?

Thfzn,
That would have to be Lee's Summit. My son graduated from there last year and wreslted there. FZN will have to be #2 or Coach Graham (not to mention Hertzog) will pummel me. I will be at state and I would love a t-shirt. Thanks.

I hope the NAACP does get into the courts and at least cost MSU more money that is the only way AD Bill Rowe will understand that this is not an process to get in the habit of. When Illinois State dropped wrestling and soccer in 1996 it cost the university 2 million and I heard it made it impossible for the adminstration to drop programs again.

What if title 9 worked in reverse? Now, do they have more womens sports than mens? Tom Tom, jump in here at any time

Gunner
12-15-2005, 07:43 AM
If the board approves the cuts MSU will have 10 womens and 6 mens sports. The problem is in the numbers. MSU enrollment is 56% women so the athletic teams under title IV have to reflect that. My point is its not the number of sports it the number of athletes girls to guys.
You don't have to fund the men sports at all. All of the women's sports at MSU are at max scholorships except womens track. While only three men programs are max out. If football went to non-schlorships they would still have to watch numbers of athletes by only letting so many males compete.
This is why I find it odd to talk with a young man and he thinks he is going to wrestle at a university on a full ride. A fully funded D-1 wrestling program can only carry 9.9 full rides. That's for ten wieght classes. I think a D-1 men basketball can carry 13 full rides for five starting position. It is much harder for a wrestling coach to find kids that can compete and still pay.

University's are now allowed to give an interest survey to the student-body to determine Title IX compliance, this has been met with a great deal of hostility from groups such as NOW, many university's have refused to give the survey.

Lindenwood University sponsers 38 varsity sports!

Gunner
12-15-2005, 10:57 AM
It's only a matter of time until surveys will be challenged in the courts. Women's groups know that most e-mails will go unopened and will not be responded to by women.
Question 100 college freshman, 50 women, and 50 men how many if asked will run out and want to play sports?
