The two weight classes I am following the closest this year (103/112) are going to be very tough in this tournament. 103 is going to be especially tough. That is probably true about most if not all of the weight classes, but I don't follow the other weight classes as close to make a knowledgeable statement.

The entire tournament is very competitive but DEPENDING on what weights the wrestlers end up, there could be extremely heavy competition in the 119 to 140 pound classes. The following are returning Missouri state medalists: Oak Park will have O’Donnell, Nay, Nay, Joiner; FZW will have Warner, Gagliano, Weist, and maybe Wolfrum; Park Hill will have Carr, Graham, Graham; Green from Oakville; Shaffer from Ray-Pec; St. Louis from Platte County. Those Centerville wrestlers will most likely meet some very stiff competition.

Aaron Ely, last years 103 champion from Leavenworth should be back.
-Not sure if Edmonds or Riffle from Mustang were Seniors last year.
-Let's not forget Robbie Hicklin at Park Hill.
-Looks like all of the Shawnee medalist graduated.
-Lee's Summit will have some retuning medalist and qualifiers, Gudde, Caswell and Budd.
-Jeff City and Blue Springs will have multiple qualifiers from last year.
-I thought MG from FZW was out for a while. Why are we saying maybe on Wolfrum?

My post was concerning the 119 to 140 pound brackets in response to the previous post concerning the 125, 130, and 135 pound weight classes. The "maybe" on Wolfrum was because I don't have any idea what weight he'll be - he was 140 last year, right? I am assuming that he has probably grown enough to be out of the 119 to 140 pound weight classes. I didn't forget about Hicklin, I intentionally did not include him because I assume he'll be well out of the 119 to 140 range since he was the 152 pound champ last year. Finally, I didn't list any of the qualifiers - only the returning Missouri state medalists for those weights.

There are a bunch of returning qualifiers/medalists - especially in the lower weights (from 103 up to 135). Depending on what weights those kids wrestle at this tournament, there may be some state medalists that don't make it out of their bracket! This is a tough, tough tournament.

Bob one wrestler the Mustangs have that will be missed is Josh Haugen who took 2nd at USA Nationals last year. The following are the only freshman I know of that could make an impact. I may be missing some in that it is not always obvious what school a kid is going into out of little league. In a tournament of this magnitude normally it is only the lower weight freshman who can make an impact, and so I only listed 119 and below freshman.

FZW: Chase Houdaschelt, Taylor Bolin
FHC: Kyle Bradley, Sean Kennedy
OP: Joe Green, Mac Bailey, Cody Tyler. I am not sure if Marty Uehlin (sp.) is a freshman or sophomore, but regardless he could make an impact.

They have wrestled twice in the past two state tournaments and I would definitely say it is Reid's time to shine...

.....and WHY exactly is it Reid's time to shine? O'Donnell pinned him @ LS tourny last year, and Garcia couldn't score an offensive point on him @ state last year. Please explain to us why and how he's going to be O'Donnell.

Patriotfan
11-10-2005, 02:42 PM
Not to take anything away from Scott b/c he did win after all, but the way I see it is that the matches at state were close and Scott stalled his way to a win. I'm sure it was strategic, Reid knows how Scott will wrestle and improved greatly so in my opinion Reid will win. At Lee Summit Reid made a few mistakes that unfortunately cost him the match. Now I am entitled to my own opinion and so I believe that Reid will win it all this year.

RP-in-Nebraska
11-10-2005, 04:16 PM
I didn't see the match, but knowing how quickly that MO refs call stalling, I would guess that your assertion that he stalled his way to the title probably isn't entirely true - at least not to the objective observer.

But, good luck to both of them at this tourney. I'm sure that if they do meet up, it will be a great match regardless of who wins.

Patriotfan
11-10-2005, 04:50 PM
I'm not saying that Scott didn't win, and I'm not saying he didn't deserve to win either, they both wrestled a hard-fought match and Scott was able to put more points on the board. What I am saying is that how their previous encounters ended up is irrelevant and they are on a clean slate for the year. I am humbly expressing my opinion in that I believe Reid will pull away with the win, no need for explanation there.

Last year's finals round started at about 5:00pm. The championship, 3rd and 5th place matches were all wrestled at the same time during this round on 3 mats. If you are at the fieldhouse by 4:00pm Saturday you shouldn't miss any any of that. :D

Seabolt and Pickerell both won first at the Cliff Keen Kick-off in Tulsa.

He did have Centerville Wrestling stuff and he and his Dad (never saw a Mom) were on my flight (American Airlines from Chicago into Tulsa) which arrived in Tulsa about 2pm. Actually, every school competing in this is at least average or better. Oak Park (1st in state class 4) will be the team to beat - ranked 8th nationally. Fort Zumwalt West (2nd in state class 4), I believe, is also nationally ranked in the top 30? Other Missouri "powerhouses" include Park Hill (1st in state class 3), Ray-Pec (2nd at state class 3), and a few others. Numerous other Missouri and Kansas state champs and medalists will be there from some of the other 20 schools listed as well. This is one of the premier tournaments in Missouri. I think T.J. will have a little bit of competition at least. :-)

Based primarily on the list you just provided:
Wt.-1-4
103-Bradley, Bailey, Waters, Forrest
112-Benenati, Lester, Uehlin, Delarbar
119-Ely, Warner, Leith, Green
125-Nay, Bolin, Shaffer, Iwen
130-Sebolt, Odonnel, St. Louis, Garcia
135-Pickerell, Joiner, Gudde, Moyer
140-Fowler, Kemp, Neumann, Neer
145-Nay, Weist, Graham, Isringhausen
152-Wolfrum, Hall, Brengle, Diekhaus
160-Burke, Koelling, Hicklin, Campbell
171-Haynes, Sumner, Henson, Ortiz
189-Cole, Kingsolver, Meredith, Evans
215-Rose, Snyder, Scheetz, Gebel
HWT-Mallonee, Thompson, Miller, McKinney

This seems to be a tough tournament for 160 not that the rest of the weights are tough but, I was looking from Mike Tracy's point of view. I believe that he will be in the top four though. He is a tough wrestler, he wrestles his best when he doesnt think and just wrestles his heart out. I love to see him when he just wrestles but when he beats himself before he steps on the mat it's not the Tracy that I know and wrestled with. I cant wait to see the results of this tournament it should be a fun one as always. Good luck to FHC.

Looks like OP won by a large margin......without the Baileys.

Park Hill was a point out of 3rd......without 2 returning state champs.

Francis Howell Central coming in 3rd is impressive.

Will a Missouri wrestler ever give T.J. Sebolt a good match? or at least go the distance. What an impressive showing by him.

TJ Sebolt is on a completely different level from the rest of the wrestlers in this tournament. It's hard to equate or quantify, but he might be the best high school wrestler I've ever seen in person. Good golly.

TJ Sebolt is a stud. The Cyclones are lucky to have him commited with intent to wrestle there. Whistle, takedown, work to pin. There is no situation that he finds himself in that he cannot work to gain the advantage and work to a pin - end of match. I didn't really think that I could see him better than he was last year when he did the same thing, but he is. This man is Cael good or better. Watch him. I'll get some photos on our site tomorrow.

Wages/Diekhaus/Fowler matches all could have went either way. The largest offical spread of points was 2 between all matches.
Wages beat Fowler 4-3
Diekhaus beat Wages won by 2 i believe in OT
Diekhaus beat Fowler (DISPUTEDLY) by 2 the dispute is Fowler should have been +2 point takedown that offical awarded but was never awarded at table. Add that to the nearfall where ref counted 5 but awared 2 points. Still it was a good match, no im not trying to take anything away from him he is a good wrestler and i congratulate him.

I would predict that on any given day with these three you will have diffrent winners each time. TOO bad they were all the same pool with Luvstuen, that would have made the finals brackets a whole lot better. Too bad to have 4 top ranked wrestlers in the same pool.

We always talk about the wrestling side of things, but sometimes things happen away from the mat that are significant.

After Matt's match with Eric Warner, Eric Warner came up to my family and said a few nice things. After he left my mom commented "What a classy kid". I just thought I would pass that along to the Fort Zumwalt folks.

I know there is a great rivalry between FZW and OP, and I would like to say that it is always more enjoyable to me when my kids are in a tournament with these two great programs (and we had teams like Park Hill, RayPec, Fox, Francis Howell Central, etc. to boot). It definitely makes the day more exciting watching the two sides going back and forth. I thought all the Missouri "power programs" had a great weekend.

These past two days were my first experience with the Lee's Summit Tournament and I have to say I came away impressed. It is an extremely well run tournament which has some great high school wrestling. I want to pass on my thanks to everyone who had a hand in running it because it was a great event to attend and watch. My family kept wanting to leave, but I kept creeping back to watch because there kept being great matches LOL. Anyway thanks again for an outstanding event.

Mr. Lester, your sons are absolutely amazing. Nick is the most amazing freshman i have seen in my short time in missouri wrestling. What he did in that benanati match was just incredible. a tech pin on a returning state champion, WOW! It seemed that after that first scramble for a takedown, it was over. What a maniac on top. He was my pick for OW. Other observances.

Bearden of Lindbergh, again, wow. Where did this kid come from. He absolutely took it to Wolfrum and absolutely dominated everyone else. In fact i enjoyed the 152 lb bracket considerably. Brengle and Hall was an exceptional 10-9 match. and the Hall Hicklin semi was a great defensive battle.

T.J. Sebolt is amazing and an exceptional pinner.

Best final was at 145, those kids just left it out on the mat and neither seemed to get tired at all. We are very lucky to have two wrestlers like Graham and Nay going at it.

Centerville is extremely tough from 130-140.

Sumner is humongous. Can't wait to see him wrestle with the big boys.

T. Campbell and Mike Tracy traded a pair of close decisions. Seems like a nice rivalry for the rest of the year. And that Romero Cotton is the real deal. Burke had a very nice OT victory over him in the finals.

The heavyweight from Jeff city wrestles very intelligantly. He is a little undersized but won a double OT match with Reo Taylor after dropping a decision to Matt McKinney in the pool rounds.

Oak Park winning this tournament by this wide of a margin missing three likely state medalists (Bailey, Bailey, and Gleason) is extraordinary and they should probably set a new point scoring record at state. What a team. very professional and workmanlike in their approach. Several of their wrestlers seemed to be undersized for their weight classes, but wrestled well just the same.

Randy B. I think you can add your son to that list also. Very impressive all weekend. He and Justin's match was one of the better matches of the weekend in my opinion. Kyle is going to be hard to stop the rest of the season as is Justin. Marty Uehlin sure didn't surprise me. I thought he was impressive at Fall Brawl and I knew another month and half in the OP system would add even more polish. He should be ranked much higher in the next Class 4 poll. Joe Green has been a superstar for years and I didn't see anything to change my opinion this past weekend. One kid who should have placed was Patrick Kennedy. His, Joe's, and Matt's pool was one of the tougher pools any weight class in my opinion. It was too bad all three couldn't have come out of that pool. Patrick would have definitely placed top five. Patrick is tough that is for sure. He only lost to Joe Green 4-3.
