These returning AAs are ranked #3 and #4 respectively by Wrestling Report.

3) Coleman Scott-Oklahoma State-Jr
4) Tyler McCormick-Missouri-Jr

Last year, Tyler had quite a bit of trouble with OSU's Nathan Morgan. With Scott and Morgan each moving up a weight, Tyler will face Scott instead of Morgan. From my own observations, Scott and Morgan were fairly similar in body plan and style (tall and lanky, tough to score on, tough riders). Only difference I noted was that Scott was dark-haired and sported a Mohawk and Morgan was California blonde (just kidding here).

Will Tyler have a better chance against the slightly smaller frame of Scott than he did against Morgan? When a wrestler, such as Scott, moves up a weight, sometimes they have trouble with the larger opponents. Other times they prosper as they don't have to cut as much weight and can put on a few more pounds of muscle in the room. Both Scott and McCormick will be juniors in 2006-07.

I would love to hear the analysis of others.

My prediction: Tyler will be able to keep it slightly closer with Scott than he did with Morgan. However, Scott is a very talented wrestler and will certainly win the lion's share of the matches between then. If they wrestle five times, look for Tyler to pick up a win one time... maybe it will be for the Big XII Championship... or maybe at a critical juncture in the 2007 NCAAs.

As much as I love watching Tyler wrestle, I don't think he'll be able to wrestle Coleman any closer than he did with Morgan. IMO, Coleman seems better on his feet at 133 than Nathan was last year, and I doubt Tyler will be getting away from Coleman when underneath. He seemed to have trouble against the kids who are better on top(i.e. Ciasulli, Morgan). Both Coleman and Nathan looked slower on their feet this year than ever, and I think they will look/be a lot quicker this year. Which is scary...

How would Bailey do against these two ?

IMHO, Bailey beats Tyler, but loses to Coleman Scott. I would imagine it would be pretty close between the two though...

How would Bailey do against these two ?

Let's see, Coleman Scott is a 2X AA and Tyler McCormick is a 1X AA. Bailey has how many weeks of college level practice? I'm sure Bailey would do just as well as most top high school recruits /beginning college students would do against college AAs.

Bailey naturally has potential of doing very well in college. But while high school success bodes well for college success, it does not guarantee college success. The list of multiple high school champs who never succeed (say, break into Round of 16 at NCAAs) is very long.

You're kidding, right?

Maybe Bailey at the end of season, not at the beginning, although I personally think Zack(provided his shoulder holds up) will be top 5 at the NCAA's at 133 this year. Hey, if Rader can place as true freshman, why can't Zack? 133 will be not as stacked as 141 IMO.

Lot more competiion than you think. Seven returning AAs (** 2x, * 1X) From WR:

133
1) Matt Valenti-Penn-Sr **
2) Mack Reiter-Minnesota-Jr **
3) Coleman Scott-Oklahoma State-Jr **
4) Tyler McCormick-Missouri-Jr *
5) Matt Keller-Chattanooga-Sr *
6) Jake Strayer-Penn State-So
7) Darrell Vasquez-Cal-Poly-Sr *
8) Mark Budd-Buffalo-Sr
9) Drew Headlee-Pittsburgh-Jr *
10) Robbie Preston-Harvard-Sr
11) Mark Moos-Michigan-Sr (125?)
12) Franklin Gomez-Michigan State-Fr (125?)

Freshman AAs last couple years:

2006
125 Nickerson (2nd)
141 Rader (6th)
149 Schlatter (1st)
149 Gillespie (7th)

2005
125 Scott (8th)
133 Reiter (4th)
141 Frishkorn (4th)
141 Churella (8th)
149 Tannenbaum (4th)
157 Becker (5th)
165 Perry (2nd)
174 Herbert (3rd)
197 Michalak (6th)
197 Davis (7th)

I just glanced at my brackets, so I may have missed someone. In any event, only 4 freshman AAs in 2006 and 10 in 2005. So in the last two years, of the 160 AAs, 14 have been freshmen. That's 8.75%.

It is very tough for freshmen to AA (even redshirt freshmen). Obviously, experience matters.

From what I have been told and seen Scott is just an animal on top and most guys on the team have quite a bit of trouble doing anything from there. If Tyler has a shot it better be in neutral or on top.

I know the wrestlers at osu and am very close to the program. Sometimes I sit in at the practices ect. What Coleman and Nathan both have in common is Eric Guerrero a tremendous coach. Coleman has gone to another level over the summer. 125 has been a difficult cut for him and he is looking forward to the jump. Nathan and Coleman are really very different. Nathan is an offensive phenom while Coleman is difficult to score on. It is a homer prediction, but I expect both to be in the finals as long as Nathan is strong enough for the 141 jump. Strength has been his problem while Coleman is very strong but not quite as offensive. Coleman won the college freestyle nationals over the summer. Bye the way, I love missouri wresting and am excited about the coming year.
