Wrestling Claims Team Title At Simpson Invite

Dec. 3, 2005 – The Bulldog wrestling team claimed the team title with three individual champions at the Simpson College Invitational on Saturday in Iowa. Blake Peterson, Gregg Nurrenbern and Matt Craig were the individual champions, while Dan Keller took home a third place and Dustin Teeman finished in fifth in his weight class.

Peterson was the number two seed in the 165 bracket and beat out top seed Brian Daly of Augustana by an 8-0 score for the title. Nurrenbern cruised to his championship at 184 with two falls and two major decisions, while Craig came through as the third seed for a 7-1 victory in the title bout over Josh Porter of Central College in the 197 weight class.

The Bulldogs scored 98 team points with the top placers in the tournament. Truman’s three individual champions were the most of the 14 schools at the invitational. The Bulldogs edged out St. John’s of Minnesota by a point and a half and Coe College by four and a half points.

Truman will next be on the mats in Pershing Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs will host Simpson College and the Northwest Missouri State Wrestling Club at 3:00 p.m. in a triangular meet.

not bad for an operating budget of $19000 at Truman

Shows what will happen when you have a full time coach. Just think how much better Truman would have been had Schutter always been a full time coach. Now if they could only get their own wrestling room. Having to quit practice for cheerleading practice is ridiculous.

You would think with the recent success at Truman would motivate the athletic department to shovel out some more cash. Merrick Meyer winning nationals last year and the team winning Simpson (when was the last time that happened?). You'd think support would be there, especially with a good lineup this year. These results with 19K, that's amazing.

Coach Schutter has done a wonderful job. He has built a quality program with little help. Most schools the size of Truman have 3-4 assitant coaches. Hopefully the administration is starting to take notice a some positive things are coming.

I got to see Truman first hand at the Simpson Inv. and they looked very impressive. Schutter has done a great job with the program. I hope the administration realizes what a quality program they have sometime soon. See you guys Sat. Schutter.
