Bulldog Wrestling Has Second-Best Team GPA
Mar. 21, 2006 – The Truman wrestling team has the second best team grade point average according to the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Bulldogs had a team GPA of 3.413 and placed eight wrestlers on the individual academic teams.
Seniors Gregg Nurrenbern and Dustin Teeman along with freshman Blake Peterson were named to the first team. For the two-time All-American Nurrenbern, it was his third selection to the academic team and was third on the first team in career wins with 107. Nurrenbern has a 3.78 GPA in Nursing.
Teeman completed his Truman career with an 89-27 record after finished the 05-06 season with a 23-8 mark and all-American honors for the second time. Teeman has a 3.31 GPA while majoring in Business.
Peterson is in his first full season with the Bulldogs after transferring from Northern Iowa. Peterson had an impressive season for the Bulldogs going 30-3 and being ranked as high as second in the nation at the 165-wieght class. Peterson won the regional championship and qualified for his first national meet this past March. He has a 3.78 GPA in Pre-Medicine.
Sophomore Chad Swagman was listed on the second team. Swagman had tough year after a breakout freshman season, going 17-14 and improving his career record to 52-33. Swagman has a 3.78 GPA in Business.
Four Bulldogs were placed on the honorable mention academic teams. Senior Steve Cox, sophomore Matt Craig, sophomore Steven Doeschot and junior David Sielert were among 125 student-athletes from 29 schools to be named on the 2005-06 Division II academic team.
Truman, under the direction of head coach David Schutter, has been well represented in the team rankings in grade point average. The Bulldogs have won the team award on two occasions. Truman trailed this year’s winner, Colorado School of Mines by six hundredths of a point.
The team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team’s NCAA Division II National Qualifying tournament.
