Bulldog Wrestling Has Second-Best Team GPA

Mar. 21, 2006 – The Truman wrestling team has the second best team grade point average according to the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Bulldogs had a team GPA of 3.413 and placed eight wrestlers on the individual academic teams.

Seniors Gregg Nurrenbern and Dustin Teeman along with freshman Blake Peterson were named to the first team. For the two-time All-American Nurrenbern, it was his third selection to the academic team and was third on the first team in career wins with 107. Nurrenbern has a 3.78 GPA in Nursing.

Teeman completed his Truman career with an 89-27 record after finished the 05-06 season with a 23-8 mark and all-American honors for the second time. Teeman has a 3.31 GPA while majoring in Business.

Peterson is in his first full season with the Bulldogs after transferring from Northern Iowa. Peterson had an impressive season for the Bulldogs going 30-3 and being ranked as high as second in the nation at the 165-wieght class. Peterson won the regional championship and qualified for his first national meet this past March. He has a 3.78 GPA in Pre-Medicine.

Sophomore Chad Swagman was listed on the second team. Swagman had tough year after a breakout freshman season, going 17-14 and improving his career record to 52-33. Swagman has a 3.78 GPA in Business.

Four Bulldogs were placed on the honorable mention academic teams. Senior Steve Cox, sophomore Matt Craig, sophomore Steven Doeschot and junior David Sielert were among 125 student-athletes from 29 schools to be named on the 2005-06 Division II academic team.

Truman, under the direction of head coach David Schutter, has been well represented in the team rankings in grade point average. The Bulldogs have won the team award on two occasions. Truman trailed this year’s winner, Colorado School of Mines by six hundredths of a point.

The team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team’s NCAA Division II National Qualifying tournament.

Very nice. The demands which wrestling puts on an individual have to make it the toughest sport to excel in and still do well academically, particularly at a challenging university like Truman. Congratulations.

I was referring to his academic ranking of 5th place, the kid is smart. He fell short of qulaifying by one point with his opponent on his back. He had a great career with several impressive matches duing the season. He should be a good fit for Truman in the classroom and on the mat. I think he will have a great college career!

I do too. He lost to Brengle and Uzzetta by a point to qualify. Any other district he would have been at State, and even at this one he could have been on any given day.

Don't think that just because he didn't go to state this year he won't do well in college. He could be a "late bloomer" like me. I didn't qualify for state my senior year and I went on to becoming one of the most decorated wrestlers at Truman State.

High school wrestling and college wrestling are very different. You may do well in high school but flop in college and vice-versa. I remember wrestling Brett Fry our freshman year of college. He was a 4-time state champ and I nearly tech falled him in college.
