Columbia, Mo. - Missouri's first individual National Champion in five
years is following through on a promise made to local media. Recent
174-pound NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion and Outstanding Wrestler of
the Tournament, Ben Askren, will be cutting his hair for the first time
since the start of the 2006 campaign in which he vowed not to cut his
hair until after winning Missouri's first wrestling title.
Askren will have his hair cut Thursday, March 23, at the Cost Cutters in
the Crossroads Shopping Center at the intersection of Broadway and
Stadium. Members of the media and fans are invited to attend the event.
A native of Hartland, Wis., Askren finished the season 45-0, earning 25
falls and nine technical falls while setting the school's longest
consecutive win streak, falls in a season and career falls (62) record.
Askren became just the 12th student-athlete at the University of
Missouri to earn a National Title and the first in the 62-year history
of the Tiger wrestling program.

Are you sure it was him with his head shaved? I saw him introduced at a football game in September and he had the full fro going.
Ben said on ESPN that he had not cut his hair for 2 years

He ought to get it cut this Saturday at the Hearnes Center in front of all the USA Wrestlers. Would be a great start to the State Tournament.

okay, the NCAA final was the first time I saw Askren wrestle. Needless to say, very impressed. I am always intrigued by wrestlers who stand out and dominate against all or nearly all of their opponents. I find it amazing that they can be so consistently good. Now, I am not nearly as knowledgeable about wrestling as most on this board, so I'm asking a serious question. What is it about Ben Askren that allows him to dominate like he does? In the one and only match I saw him wrestle last week, he was on his opponent like "white on rice". This was the second ranked guy in the nation for goodness sakes!! You guys and gals have watched him for a long time now. What does he have that no one else had this year?

Balance, a lot more strength than he'll admit to, arms the length of a Saturn V rocket, and a mind set that says "I'm going to go after him no matter what."
His opponent in the final, Jake Herbert, is really, really good, probably better in talent than most of the other nine champs.

Ridiculous balance and leverage.......he can make the slightest hip adjustments that other people would never think of.

Great flexibility too. Get in on a deep single and straighten that leg out, and he still manages to keep his hips back from you. And when you're in a scramble with him, his joints seem to go just a little bit further, while yours have to yield and give up position.
