Okay, the Mizzou wrestling season has been over for 2 days now so I would like some (educated) opinions on how the lineup will shape up for next season. If possible, list the odds-on favorite at the weight first & then list who should be next in line to give us some idea of the possible depth. In spite of some negative opinions regarding the Tigers performance at the NCAA Tournament, Missouri could well have a more competitive lineup for next year.

125 - Kephart - Olanowski (sp?) backup
133 - McCormick
141 - uhhhh....not sure. Maybe Hoehn. I'd like to see him there. Maybe Wagner if he wants to go down there.
149 - Wagner, if he's not at 141. He needs to get a little stronger to compete at this weight. I like his high risk style. We're very deep here w/ Cole, Marable, Espinosa, Sanguinet, etc.
157 - Pretty sure Chandler will be there again next year. MU is very deep here as well.
165 - Pell
174 - Askren
184 - Ray Ray
197 - Askren
285 - Connole/Ellis/JC transfer (?)....not sure what's going to happen here.

I'm thought Pell was a senior. Wasn't he seeded 8th or 9th as a freshman and didn't place?

Many People said the same about Ethan.
But if Hosick would move up he would have to beat Jake Jensen, Clay Kehrer, Brent Parkey, and New recruit Cody Hill (even though he is mentioned at 174 He will be their 84 ina year or two.

What is this I hear about Perry moving down to go after Hendricks?

Minnesota:
165: Nate Matousek
197-Mitch Kuhlman

MIchigan-
141-Josh Churella (2005-AA 2006 Qualfier)

Don't be surprised to see Kuhlman back at 165.

J Churella is going 149.......apparently.

285-Kole Conrad (1st-2006, 2nd-2005, 3rd-2004) Two minor corrections: First, his name is Cole Konrad; second, Konrad was 4th in 2004-- Leonce Crump beat Conrad in the 3rd place match.

Illinios-
125-Joe Gomez (2x IL Champ) Look for Gabe Flores to move back down to 125. Gabe was undersized at 133, but still performed very well. Gabe should be a solid AA contender at 125.

133-Gabe Flores (Qualifier) Gomez will contend for 133 but isn't anything close to a for-sure starter. He did not perform well this year and several others in the room have as good of a chance to be the Illinois starter. This might be a weight where the Illini don't qualify anyone.

141-Cassio Pero (7th 2005 Qualfier 2006) Pero was truly ineffective this year. I thought that maybe he was just off to a slow start, but he never got it going. And I would guess that as the season went along he also lost his confidence. Oddly enough, his last match might have been his best match of the year. He beat Michael Keefe (who also had a disappointing year) and looked good. Then Cassio injury defaulted his next match. Who knows what to expect from Pero next year.

149-Troy Tirapelle (Qualfier) raw talent still early on the college Div I learning curve. Tenacious on top, mediocre from his feet. Good head on his shoulders. Look for him to be much more consistent next year.

157-Mike Peota (Qualfier @ 165 #1 recruit in 2004) Explosive and talented, toward the end of the season he looked flat and increasingly tactical-- "Illinois style"? At 157 he won't be at the size/muscular disadvantage that he encountered this year. Sky is the limit for Poeta-- if the Illinois coaching staff doesn't coach all the aggressiveness out of him.

165-Don Reynolds (2x Qualfier) Don looked better at 174, so I'm going to guess that he stays up in weight. Don is very inconsistent, talented, and mistake-prone. Poor leg defense, but a good scrambler. AA-potential.

Best guess for starter at 165 is Roger Smith-Bergsrud.

174-Nick Guida (2x PA Champ MO FR/SO open winner)/
John Drego (2x IL Champ # 56 Recruit) Drego is a drain cleaner-- you meant Dergo. Will most likely redshirt.

184-Guida/Pat Brownson Brownson was a 2x IL state champ and has spent his career behind Glynn and Friedl. However, in Opens he has not done anything promising, so I'm not sure what his potential is to compete at Div I. Guida had some good success at Opens. Look for these two to compete for the starting job.

197-Patrick Bond (4x VA Champ/JR Double Champ 2004/#4 Recruit in 2005) Will probably take his lumps big time early in season.. and then get beaten up in Big Ten season. So we'll see how he does at the end of the season.

285-Matt Weight (Qualifier)Although Matt has one more eyar of eligibility remaining, he is graduating and will not return. Look for John Wise-- who has three more years of eligibility-- to start for the Illini. When I watched him he looked like raw athletic talent-- big, strong, and fast-- so as he gets more experience we'll see how he does.

Even before the meltdown at the just-concluded NCAAs, 2006-07 was looking like a rebuilding year for the Illini. Middle-of-the-pack in the Big Ten will probably be a good finish for them.

I believe at 125 Minny will have Jayson Ness (Runner up at Senior Nats to Nickerson) At 165, Fudge already stated Kuhlman will probably be there.
