My nephew just completed his football season and is a bit beat up from the long season. He had a couple injuries during the season but worked through them, one injury caused him to miss some practice and a game. . .that same injury was aggravated in the dome. I want him to take a few weeks off and let his body "refresh/heal" itself. He is all for a "healing time" but the wrestling coach is not in favor of time off.

I understand it is wreslting season, but the season is grueling and I fear if he goes into the season short on practice and not completely injured his season may be cut short anyway. . .

Any thoughts from parents and or experienced wrestlers. . .how to deal with this as I try to advise my nephew? I don't want to ruin his relationship with the coach(s); I feel a the time off NOW is better than LATER. :?

My thoughts are to rest him a few weeks no matter what the coach wants.

I feel like I should have written to Dear Abby.

Tell him to "rub some dirt in it and get back in the game"

This is a ludricrous situation to try and comment on.
We certainly don't know the coach or the wrestler.

The coach-athlete relationship is an important element, one based on trust going both ways. The coach has to have a trust in the athlete, that he will work hard, and follow direction. The wrestler needs to be able to trust that his coach will do what's best for him, as well as the team.

Sounds like the coach has doubts about the severity of the injury.

Remember we are talking about a game. Maybe the coach just wants him to get out and drill easy so that even though he's healing, he's still getting some muscle memory for the moves he hasn't done for 8 mos.

way to many 'ifs' for anyone to give you any decent advise.

It really has to be between the athlete & the coach ultimately and if they need to work on their relationship & understanding so be it. Best not to interfere, unless you truly fear for his health.

(my advise, next time don't go out for football, wrestle yr. round) 8)

Trust the coach's judgement.
Don't be one of "those parents" (or uncles???)

If he can't handle it maybe he shouldn't wrestle at all.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. . .

Once the coach was sure it was a nagging injury that just needed some time to heal there were no issues. He lost early mat time but was able to condition. He's back in action.

repmo- there is a diference between injury and hurt. If you are involved in coaching you are the type of coach a person should fear, if you are a parent, I pitty your child if you may push him into a more severe injury and if you are a wrestler you know the difference so the remark was not needed.

Thanks for the verification, MG. I knew I remembered he was a kid, but couldn't remember why I remembered that. I'll remember to remember my memory better. :-s

It's about time. I'm getting tired of picking up the slack.
