saw this on the class 4 page Thought it was interesting to see what Nevada was doing for weight control, would MO go this route?
Following is an article from Pahrump Valley Times, NV.

Quote:
Wrestling a 'weighty' issue
In an attempt to make wrestling a safer and healthier sport, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association is developing a Nevada Wrestling Weight Management Program.

This program, the Web site http://www.nevada._____.com reports, began as a pilot in 2001-2002. Testing is mandatory again for the 2005-2006 season.

All wrestlers must be tested, the body fat percentage recorded and minimum weight established before the wrestler is eligible to compete. The program will be implemented for the 2005-2006 wrestling season.

Full details on how this policy works are on the Web site.

Changes in the Nevada Weight Management Program for 2005-2006 are:

• The wrestler must certify at the lowest minimum weight class at scratch weight before the state qualifying series begins.

• A wrestler may compete in the league/region and/or state tournament(s) at the minimum weight class for which he/she has certified at scratch weight for that weight class.

Wrestlers must certify with a scratch weigh-in at the weight class that they wish to enter into post-season competition. The wrestler may compete at the weight class in which their seven percent predicted weight, less two percent, places them. There will be no two percent allowance for wrestlers that test below 7 percent.

All wrestlers that are assessed below seven percent must have a medical release to wrestle at their alpha weight.

A wrestler may not weigh in more than the weight class above that weight after he/she has certified (or set the lowest recorded weigh-in during the weight loss descent plan), without automatically re-establishing a new weight loss descent plan based on that weigh-in and the date of the weigh-in.

A wrestler measuring less than seven percent body fat must maintain the original percentage of body fat or higher in order to have a valid re-assessment.

A coach must enter the competition results (for JV and varsity) and actual wrestling weight for each competitor on the NWCA's web site prior to the next competition.

The penalty for a wrestler circumventing (attempting to cheat and/or cheating) the weight assessment process is:
• First offense: Suspension for one wrestling season.
• Second offense: Suspension for two wrestling seasons.

and MG says it takes effect in MO for 06-07, i dont know bout any one else but this seems like a real bad deal for naturally skinny guys. any thoughts?

as an official, there is a weight control program coming for next year and it is fairly close to what Nevada has. It might be bad for the skinny guys but it is also keeping guys from cutting massive amounts of weight. I have mixed feeling about this myself. As a wrestler in high school this would have greatly altered my career (even though it wasn't that great) :D

So, if you are naturally, say 4% body fat, you have to get a doctor's note saying you are naturally a twig and have always been below the seven percent level in this program???? Is that good enough?

This doesn't make sense. Shouldn't kids under 7% but above 5% get leeway down to their 5% predicted weight to be fair. If not, a kid is better off being 7% even (and get the allowance), rather than be at 6.9% and have no leeway.

It seems that this rule is punishing the kid that is "naturally lean" more than the one that is cutting weight. All kids should get the same allowance, regardless of their % of body fat. Kids that "yo yo" are still rewarded under this system, whereas a naturally lean kid who is off by a small amount is penalized.

Im not totally sure if this info is all correct but as I understood our former weight trainer and nutritionist body fat percentage is based on a average to muscel. so 6.9 percent as an average would be 7.0 percent. Most doctors will say 5.0 percent or lower may be unsafe for minor age athletes. This is a saftey rule but in not for the hundreads of athletes who have cut weight and have had no problems but for the few who will. Dont be sure this will end wrestling as we know it for there are top Missouri school programs already using the formula.

Guys my boys have been wrestling in CA under these rules for two yrs now. It's not a bad as you think and the number of boys who fall under 7% is very few. Those that do can get a waiver from there doctor.
