My sister and two cousins who go to northwest just told me that they are about to add a wrestling program. It goes to the senate on Sept. 20. They said they do not see any reason why this should not pass.

That's a rather small schoool. What division would it be, NAIA?

09-20-2005, 07:37 AM
They are in the same conference as CMSU

09-20-2005, 07:39 AM
William Jewell is also trying to get a program started as well. Hopefully more colleges in the KC area will follow this trend.

I don't see that happening anytime soon. It would be nice if we did though.

As I have posted previously we are in the process of finalizing a National Collegiate Wrestling Association team at NWMSU. Last night we were approved by the Organizational Affairs Comm. Tonight we go before the student senate for final approval. Assuming all goes well we will compete this year in the NCWA conference and national tournament, as well as 6-7 open tournaments and with a little luck some dual meets.

Just to clarify this is NOT and NCAA or NAIA program. However, that being said the NCWA is a great opportunity and we're excited about it here at Northwest. We currently have more than 30 guys on the roster. If anyone has questions regarding the new team please contact David Nugent at northwestwrestling@hotmail.com. We hope to have a website up within a few weeks so everyone can keep up to date.

Good luck guys!

By the way to you know the last national champion to wrestle for NWMS, hint he won his national title at another school.

Good news for all wrestling fans. Tonight the NWMSU Student Senate voted unanimously to recognize the NWMSU Wrestling Team as an organization. We still have to finalize our paperwork with the NCWA, but other than that we are good to go.

Since I started trying to get this put together in early May, we have come a long way in being able to get this approved tonight. I think the work put into this and the interest that has been expressed by the student body speaks loudly for the interest in wrestling in this area and the desire to have some avenue to continue to wrestle competitively at the college level. The NCWA has more than 100 member schools and provides a great deal of opportunity. In addition we have two great advisors on the faculty in Dr. Loren Butler and Dr. Terrance Robertson of the HPERD Department who have helped to make all of this happen.

I just wanted to say congrats and good luck. Establishing and getting the program up and going so quickly had to take a heck of a lot of work. The sport of wrestling got stronger because of your efforts...many thanks to all that had the vision and perseverance to get it done.

Since we are an NCWA program, the school itself will not offer scholarships. However, numerous programs have great booster organizations thate are able to offer scholarships. Hopefully we can get to this level.

Currently we are relying on several volunteer coaches.

I'm probably gonna catch hell for this......but.. 1. Who is going to be on the roster? 2. What is Northwest Missouri State? Does this school go by another name? ie Northeast=Truman etc.

It's no Mo Valley.

Maryville does have a nice community though

Our roster includes wrestlers from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. It is not final yet, but it will include some names that might be familiar to Missouri wrestling fans.

As far as who we are, check out http://www.nwmissouri.edu to find out more about our fine institution.

Thfzn,

That would be Mr. Mark Burrell. I call him mister because he abused me on more than 1 occassion. Closest match I had with him was 5-0, and I was ecstatic about that.

Dscott,

Your right. Burrell transfered to CMSU after NWMS dropped their program, he went on to become a 2X National Champion.

Where did you wrestle at? I'm assuming if you wrestled Burrell it was the late 80's early 90's sometime.

Thfzn,

Wrestled him in a quad with SIU-Edwardsville, TSU, Augustana, and CMSU, wrestled him at the Drake-Iowa Open, and wrestled him 1 year at regionals.

Northwest's first match of the season will be a dual at KU on November 5th. In addition to wrestling KU, there is a possibility that Northwest might also face K-State and/or the University of Texas-Dallas. We look to have a full schedule finalized soon. It will include a dual against an in-state school.

We are constantly compiling a roster due to the new interest shown by the students as our presence becomes more well known. We have encouraged participation, and rejected noone. However we hope to solidify a full line-up within the next couple of weeks.

Here is a rough roster. We've got more students that are going to join the team, as many are just finding out about us. In addition we've got 2-5 football players that intend to wrestle after their season. A couple of current starters at an NAIA institution are tentatively planning on transferring in at the semester so our roster could look very different in the weeks and months to come. We open up our season this Saturday at 6 p.m in Lawrence, KS against KU and Colorado.

Northwest won 8 of 11 matches against Colorado and KU on Saturday. This was the first time in 20 years that a team has competed for Northwest. The team will be back in action this Sunday at the University of Dubuque-Spartan Open.
