With the 2006 State Wrestling Tournament moving to the new Mizzou Arena this year, what are some of your greatest memories of the State Tournament at Hearnes Center?

WOW! there are many.................
1. Tim Davis bumping 2 wt classes to beat Micah Gardner for the title =D> in 93.
2. Being able to witness Schatzmann's 4 undefeated titles, and having it presented to him by legends. (bergfeld, whitney, infranca...I get goose bumps just thinking about it!) We may never see that again. :smt038
3. on a sentimental note, watching the same people sit in the same spot, year after year, after year whether they have a son wrestling or not. And knowing that old wrestlers know where that group is, and seem to gravitate to it. It's like a reunion.
4. On a personal note..........watching my son have a medal placed around his neck. A day that I will never forget.
5. Having my daughter sing the National Anthem before the finals, my son's senior year.
6. See everyone later this week. Hope that the new arena holds as many good times as the Hearnes. :smt039

For the fans of the Fox C-6 district (Seckman and Fox) nothing can beat the 2001 State Finals at 135 with Brian Haley winning his title then Cody Greene winning his.

The Bledsoe Degeneration X celebration.

Hansen sucking in the impossible double leg on Kephart with under ten seconds in the match.

Kenny Burleson beating Buchanon

And my personal note:
Watching my brother bring home a medal and take Ethan Kyle and Josh Shrum into overtime

I am happy to have the great memories of Chris recieving his medals at state. But I also enjoyed the Kyle-Moyer match even though I was rooting for a 4 time champ out of Kyle. I also enjoyed the Hanson-Kephart match.

My all-time favorite match was when Chris and Gifford wrestled Chris's senior year at state. Because of all the things said, I was happier at that moment than any. Well except the match when he beat Lubbert at State his sophomore year putting him into the medal round.

Without a doubt, it was the class 4A heavyweight final from 1979.

Only 2 class back then and the class 1A-3A match was over in 20 seconds when Gary Briggs pinned his opponent very quickly. That left all of Hearnes watching the larger schools final. It was between 220 LB Mike Craig ( St. Joseph Central) and 400 + Lb Herman Smith (Riverview Gardens). It was David Vs Goliath. The smaller and quicker Craig pounded Smith the entire match for a 21-4 victory( no tech fall back then). All of Hearnes came to their feet when Craig shot in on a single leg (?) and Smith sprawled. Craig kept coming and actually picked up (a few inches) Smith and dumped him for a takedown.

I can still hear that crowd roaring. It was truly amazing to watch.

P.S. What kind of a 215 LBer would Craig be today? Scary to think about.

Standing in the dim tunnel, shoulder to shoulder with your opponent. Almost like a gladiator, you inch closer to your date with destiny in the Colosseum. You can hear the roars of the crowd. Your name is called, and as you step into the light and look up, there seemed to be 10,000 people there.

I sure hope Mizzou Arena has a dim tunnel...what an effect.

I had been going to the State Tournament since I was a kid. I had family members, friends, and boyfriends that were wrestlers back then. I got hooked and have went most years since then. I never imagined that someday my own sons would be walking out of that tunnel as I watched from the stands. Just my oldest son qualifing for State was a total thrill for me. Then seeing my next in line medal last year.... well needless to say was over the top for me. Now, more than ever I know so many kids on a personal level that I have watched develop since little league that are competing. Wrestlers were my hero's when I was young and they are my hero's now. Best of Luck to all the wrestlers!! Thanks for a million great memories over the years and looking forward to many more to come.

125lb. 3A finals in 1989...

nash (lafayette) vs. albertson (chilli)
earlier that year:
nash over albertson 13-3 in iowa
albertson over nash 7-4 district finals

3A state finals underway
4A finished... williams wins
1A-2A finished... sill?
on the 3A mat
nash down 6-3
wrestlers scramble out of bounds
clock stops with 5 ticks left
both guys head to head in the center of the mat
nash tosses albertson
2 takedown, 2 nearfall
clock stops
nash 7-6 for 1st state title...

funny part:
bracket has white-out over "6-3"
below the "champion" line
with 7-6 in ink over the top.

isn't over until it's over

Class one memories. Benningfield - Komer '93... Komer down I believe one, coming around for takedown as time expires, begging ref for two, but to no avail; Brent Merhoff comes back after a year off to beat defending champion Raul Lema 5-3. And my all time favorite...1994. Matt Infranca beats Alando Harker to become the first four time state champion in FORTY YEARS!!! That was a sight that I will never forget. And then Brandon Reinbold secures the team title for Oak Grove and starts pointing at the 2nd place Trenton crowd... what a way to go out.

Nick Rallo Sn. went over the rail in 1995 when his son Charlie won his first state title, it was a pretty dramatic scene. A little background...Charlie's older brother Tim has passed away in a car accident the previous Spring, after finishing second in state twice prior to his senior year, Charlie along with the other members of the SCW team dedicated the season in the memory of Tim, so when Charlie won it was very emotional for the Rallo family and those close to them. That stands out in my memory bank.

Other random memories ...

I remember the Nash vs. Alberson match, what stands out was the Alberson's coach yelling at him to shoot while ahead by 3 with five seconds left, he shot and the rest is history.

The kid from Platte County last year (can't remember his name) launching his opponent with a few seconds left.

Roy Martin vs. Jason Sexton in the 1990 state finals the two defending champions battling into OT, with Sexton winning his third title.

Bich Pho of St. Charles over Jeff Morton of Helias way back in 1984, Pho pinning Morton with a Sanders cradle in OT.

1987 - 11 State Champs from the GAC, including 4 from SCW(I was on that team so it stands out)

Jeff Ditter of Fort Zumwalt vs. Smith of Oak Park in the 1986 finals I think the match was 13-12.

Chad Swagman pinning defending champ Peter Miller in OT his JR year, then beating 2 champions and a two-time runner up his SN year.

Those are a few I'll think of some more later.

Seating arrangements are a huge tradition...how long will it take to reserve, and memorize, a new section of seats?

Wasn't that the same Rallo that pointed to the Helias crowd in an explicit manner?

How about Travis Crall of OG coming back from about 11 down to win his first title over Maun from Odessa?

Schatzmen winning his forth and moments later his own crowd had a sign congratulating Brett Fry on his fourth.

Schrimpf losing by disqualification when Dean from Lafayette wouldn't continue, Brockman losing his chance with defending champ Andy McVey by getting dq'd for an illegal armbar.

Cody Ritter's three titles!!

Clemson tearing the tape off his fingers during the closing seconds of his title match and then running through the stands after winning, Jaros throwing away his medal, Neil Yust winning back-to-back titles, Knapp's four trips to the finals, Cavanah's dual against OG in the finals in three consecutive years, TJ Hill's backflips :D

I will try to explain the weather pattern to you. First the 60 +degree temperature happens when the SUN is out and usually very little wind and if there is any wind it is usually coming out of the south! Now when it is -14 degrees it is normally overcast, usually snowing or freezing rain, winds out of the north, and you left your coat inside the Hearnes Center. I sometimes get confused with Doppler Dave but I am hoping I was able to help you out. If you have any more weather related questions I will try my best to help you!

Sounds like the perfect plan. We need to establish a few guidelines though...

1. NO PEPPERMINT SCHNAPPS!!!!!!!!! Other shots are OK
2. No sleeping in bathtubs.

Glad your coming. Is the birthday boy and that plain daughter of yours coming?

The crowds chanting

H E L I A S

H O W E L L

Sorry Ted, but Devenny in 88, just the way it happened at the end.

Nash over Albertson was nuts. All he had to do was dance.

All the times Vince Labasco cost a kid a match.

Paris and Clark from Excelsior getting the double stall called and Clark losing the match because the official didn't realize how many warnings he had given out.

The Oak Grove HWT pinning his kid in the Finals to win the match and the State Team title. That had to be the biggest amount of preasure on any kid and he came through.

Rimmer pinning McCormick in :29 seconds in the Finals.

Gunnels with that sweet ass throw to win it all.

The kid with no legs from SWMO wrestling in the 80's. I think he wrestled Brewer who was just about his hieght.

Shaun Hickey getting beat in his first round match against Prozanski. I still cant decide if it was the correct call.

Brett Stewart being forced to take a medical default in the finals against Nick Pedockie. Brett was the best 125lber in the state that year.

Watching the HWT from Lebanon tear his ACL in the finals after he signed a letter of intent to play football at MIAMI.

Better than DeVenney, Hickey or Ficken?

I wrestled stewart, devenny and ficken and he was better than both of them imo. Brett split with Eric D at Freestyle and Greco state but I give the edge to Brett.

Hickey on the other hand I can't say. So ???? I am not sure, but it would of been a hell of a match.

I forget which year, maybe 2001, Casey and I watching Gary Peterson win his state title for FZN

2004 - Watching Rob Sherry, Cantrell, and Chad Swagman win their state titles. Especially Swagman after being beaten by Hewitt at District and Sectionals, only to pin him in the finals. He was truly the "Funkmaster".

2005 - Watching Casey defeat a very, very, good Tyler Epstein in the 3rd place match and holding my breath when he was thrown with like 6 seconds left in the third period and then scrambling out of it. That would have tied the score if Tyler would gotten a TD out of it.

I hope 2006 at the new place brings some favorite memories for everyone. I know that wrestling in general from LL thru HS has brought a lot of good memories for me and no matter what happens this year at state for Casey, he's still my hero!

Another exciting Hearnes moment (THFZN may not think so) was when Eric Devenney won his state title in '88.

That's kinda funny, Mine is my third place finish in 1987 @105 lbs for SCW.

I enjoyed the first round of the "2nd era" of 4x state champs (Infranca, Schatzman, Fry). Back before we didnt have them every year. What was there, a 30-40 year gap between the first 2 four timers and the 3rd?

Favorite......watching my little brother come from behind to beat Kyle Tracy( Richmond) in the finals

2nd Favorite memory.....the next year watching him trip going up the steps in the upper level and dumping a 32 oz drink over the rail onto the people on the below. The lid stayed on till it hit. It was like a bomb

Also, the Stewart / Martin finals match in 82. A picture of the outcome is the cover of the 83 program.

Unfortunately the memory that sticks with me the most is not a good one, my Senior year @ state in 1988. I wrestled 119 & lost my 1st match & the kid that beat me from Raymore-Peculiar, he had to win his next match & it was against Tony Purler for me to stay in the tournament, it's pretty obvious who was gonna win that match. Knowing that if I would've cut to 103 (witch I was in the process of doing) I would've had a extremely good chance of bringing home the Gold @ 103 & I've had a lot of team mates today, now coaches seem to agree on my chances of getting 1st in 1988 @ 103 was extremly good . But my parents got separated that season & eventually divorced & it kinda screwed me up & I didn't care anymore & pretty much gave up. It would have been nice to have had Coach Martin then, I do believe he would've gotten my head on straight & on the right path to the Gold, but unfortunately he came to SCW a few years to late for me & that's something I have to live with.

I think my favorite memories of Hearnes will always be being allowed to sing the national anthem prior to the finals in '90 and '91.

But the most memorable, without a doubt is Dale Pliemann looking at me before the finals in the tunnel, smiling and saying, "Let's go have some fun". And boy did we....

I remember both of those, especially in '91. We were in the middle of the Gulf War, and before the national anthem was sung someone sang "Proud to be an American" - the electricity in Hearnes was ridiculous.

Then about 20 minutes later, Kenny Clark pinned Sansone in the spladle and freshman Infranca pins defending state champ Mehrhoff in :30 - awesome.

He sure did! I remember that match too. Jordan had been spankin the mess of of Kenny, then wham, bam, thank you maam. It was over. I think everyone was in shock over that one, (with the exception of Kenny).

If memory serves, I think Terrell Fletcher (171) got caught in one by Mike Kreh from Layfette in the quarters that year.

I have a feeling Clark was in shock, too. That is definitely in my all-time Top 10 Hearnes memories. Jordan was a bad, little dude..
