The Bulldogs of Truman State gave Fort Hays State all they could handle Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU escaped with a 21-20 win in the non-conference dual, improving their overall record to 9-2-1. Truman State is now 9-3-1 on the season. The #14 Bulldogs won five of the eight match-ups, but could not quite catch the Tigers after leaving two weights open in the dual. The Tigers scored only nine points in their three non-forfeit wins.
FHSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead as #8 Aaron Meister picked up a win with Truman State being open at 174 pounds. TSU would quickly close the gap with #2 Greg Nurrenbern winning by fall over Mike Howell in the 184-pound match. Truman would continue the momentum picking up a win at 197 pounds from Steve Doeschot. Doeschot defeated Dustin Trego 4-2, giving the Bulldogs a 9-6 advantage.
#5 Andrew Ubben would tie the match for the Tigers in the 285-pound match with a 5-1 decision over Matt Craig. Kory Lira would also pick up a win at 125 pounds with TSU being open at the weight. Going into the five minute intermission, FHSU led 15-9.
Truman State would come out firing from the intermission, winning the 133-pound and 141-pound matches. Dan Keller won a tight battle with Derek Patterson scoring three back points late in regulation to pick up the 11-8 win. Adam Vogt would also win a tight match with Jeremy Johnson by a 4-2 count, tying the dual once again at 15-15.
The momentum would quickly swing back in the Tigers’ favor with Mikel Delk picking up a 6-5 win over Chad Swagman. Delk won in regulation, breaking a 5-5 tie with his accumulated riding time. #2 David Nordhues won over Dustin Teeman in the 157-pound match, winning 4-0 and putting the Tigers back up by six.
Truman State needed a fall out of #8 Blake Peterson to catch the Tigers in team points, and nearly pulled it off. Peterson would score a technical fall over Phil Hart in the 165-pound match giving him five points, but the Bulldogs fell just one point short of a tie.
